3rd installment of the Basic Course.

I am a former United States Marine Corps Scout/Sniper. In addition to being a Scout/Sniper, I also served tours as a Small Arms Instructor, Marine Security Guard and Range NCOIC of the Stone Bay Pistol Range, the main and largest pistol range of Camp Lejeune, NC. I was a Jungle Patrol Leader for the Marine Barracks, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines and shot competitively for the 2nd Bn 8th Marines Rifle/Pistol Team. I was a Scout/Sniper Team Leader in Operation Restore Hope, Mogadishu, Somalia.

I trained with American military units such as FAST Co, Marine Force Recon, ANGLICO, US Navy SEALs, and the US Army Rangers. I also trained with numerous foreign military units, including 2e Etranger 1e Compagnie of the French Foreign Legion, the British Royal Marines, Canadian Airborne, Royal Dutch Marines, Philippine Marines, Russian Naval Infantry and the ROK Marines.

I hold Instructor certifications from various government and private entities for Sniper/CounterSniper/Precision Rifle, Carbine, Shotgun, Pistol, SMG, Less Lethal, Use of Force and Tactics. I have been a Sniper and Sniper Instructor for over 20 years. I am also a Remington 700 Armorer.

Usually, my Precision Rifle/Sniper Classes are held on a one-on-one basis, or in small groups of 3 or less.

I will be teaching a 1-day Precision Rifle class in the College Park area on May 15, 2011.

Cost will be $150 per person, due NLT than April 15. I will be limiting the class to 20 students.  Course fee is non-refundable, although I will move you to a future class if you can't make this one.

Topics covered will include (but aren't limited to):
•Selection, care and maintenance of the entire system (rifle, scope, rings, mounts, ammunition, bipod, cases, etc.). This includes a comprehensive disassembly and other Armorer's tips.
•Marksmanship basics
•Use of a mil-based or other ranging reticle for ranging unknown distance targets
•Ballistics (internal, external and terminal)
•Use of optics (including adjustments and all other functions)
•Multiple target engagement
Use of data book
Zeroing
CCB/CHB/HFB

Gear list will include:

•Rifle capable of 1MOA. Bolt actions and semi-automatics are both welcome
•Quality optics. The following features are mandatory on the optic:
1.Finger adjustable turrets with audible/tactile “clicks”, MOA or mil are fine
2.Ranging reticle, mil or MOA based are both acceptable
•Ammunition, 100 rounds.  Ammunition must be "match grade" from a reputable manufacturer, or known handloads of equal or better accuracy
•Data book w/ calculator
•Rifle-mounted bipod, or front rest
•Sling
•Rear bag(s) (optional)
•Shooting mat (optional)
•Minimum 5 “dummy” rounds (optional)
•Spotting scope (optional)
•Eye and ear protection
•Clothes and footwear appropriate to the weather. If it rains, we train, as long as there is no thunder/lightning.
•If you are military/LE, it is preferred that you use your duty gear, body armor and other ancillary equipment that you will use on duty. Train like you fight!

At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion.

I am a Georgia POST certified Instructor. If you are a LEO and bring a C12 to the class, I will sign off on it and you can turn it in to your Training Staff, or directly to POST, for credit.

Please respond here and let me know if you will be attending. Payment is in advance to reserve your spot. If you assure me that you are in, and that the payment is enroute, I will consider your spot HELD. Below is a roster of the students who are signed up. Please IM me for payment info, I will be acccepting checks, MO's and PayPal.

Feel free to call me at (678) 523-7522 if you have any questions.

Thank you and Semper Fi!

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS, PLEASE READ:
1.  If you plan on using a rifle other than a bolt action tactical or varmint model from Remington, Savage, Winchester, FN, or a custom-built rifle

and/or

a scope made by other than Nightforce, Leupold, US Optics, IOR, Schmidt & Bender, Premier Reticles, Vortex Viper PST, Bushnell Elite series or Sightron SIII you must contact me so that we can discuss your system and make sure that it will meet the requirements of the course.

2.  Your system must be fully assembled and sighted in with a recent 100 yard zero prior to the class.  The zero must be done with the ammunition that you will be using in the class.  I offer my services for free to any of my students who need assistance with any rifle or optics work, or zeroing, that they may need.

3.  Ammunition must be “match grade” from a known manufacturer, or handloads that you have shot out of the rifle you are bringing to the class and are sure of their accuracy.

4.  A bipod or ruck to shoot off, as well as a rear bag.  For a bipod, I highly recommend the Harris BRM-S (6”-9”, notched leg, swiveling).  If you wish to purchase a rear bag, excellent models are available from Gunner’s Gear.  http://gunnersgear.com/

5.  If you don't have some sort of adjustable cheekpiece, or cheekpad, I recommend one.  The comb of your stock needs to be high enough that your cheek bone rests on it naturally when you have a perfect sight picture, not your jawbone or the middle of your cheek.  Ask several of my former students and they'll tell you this makes a HUGE difference.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about any of your gear.  I would rather sort the problems out ahead of time than have you show up at the class with gear that won't work, or that is set up wrong.

I will reiterate, I offer my services for free to students when it comes to mounting up scopes/bases/rings (including lapping the rings), weighting and texturing stocks, and any other tweaking that your system may need.  I will also assist in getting your rifle zeroed prior to the class.

I highly recommend this class. Shep knows his stuff and is a very good instructor. If you're new to distance shooting, don't be intimidated. Just listen and follow Shep's directions and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish.

Oh, and find a second job to fund your new addiction.

dant62, I've got an excellent Rem700 Police school rifle that I rent out for a small fee, if you're interested.  I've got all the rest of the gear to loan, as well.  You just supply the match ammo.

Me too. I don't think my Mosin Nagant w/ iron sites would quite cut the mustard.

dant62 can't make this course, so I have a "rental" rifle available that will shoot .5MOA.........if you do your part!

When do you think you'll do another? I really wish I could make this one, especially with the rental 700 available.

My rental gun is spoken for by rotaryeye for this class.

I'll probably do another in July or so.  I'm always available for private classes, or a small group if you and your friends want to book a class together.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have a rig that doesn't meet the specs I laid out above.  I by no means came even close to listing every rifle and/or scope that is good to go for the course.  The majority of the folks that have contacted with a rifle and/or optic that isn't on the list above has received a thumbs up from me.

I am in.

Need to decide which rifle to bring.  My 308 Mauser is pretty amazing both with the can and without.  But I also have tricked out 700 I could use.  It has a Sheperd scope.  The Mauser has a bushnell tactical elite.

Oh, please PM me the email address to paypal to.

Which do you think Shep?

Whichever one you feel most comfortable with will work.  Preferrably, a scope with a ranging reticle that is either MOA or mil-based.  Your Bushnell Elite will do just fine for that.  The ranging reticle isn't a must, since the ranging exercises are done as a 2-man team, so you could double up on your partner's rifle.

Shep,

I really want to take this course but I'll be taking our Cub Scout pack on an overnight spelunking trip the day before.

If you plan to offer the course again in July, count me in for that one. I've got a Savage 110 bolt action .30-06 (synthetic stock) that has given me nothing but trouble with regards to accuracy... maybe  I can get it into shape between now and then.

What ammo you using in it?

My 110FP loves the Georgia Arms 150 ballistic tip.

Would a 5.56 Ar with a 1:7 twist 18" barrel and heavy match bullets get out far enough for this type of class?
3/2/2011 10:27:08 AM EDT
[#25]
That will work just fine.  I've had several students in the Basic class running .223's with match loads and they performed perfectly for them.  What optic are you running?

No optic yet, any lower cost suggestions that are still rock solid and track good.

Super Sniper 10x.

3/2/2011 3:06:38 PM EDT
[#29]
SuperSniper 10x (without side parallax):  $300
Bushnell Elite 3200 3-10x50mm:  about $260
Bushnell Elite 4200 2.5-10x50mm:  about $420
Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x50mm w/ mil dots:  about $780
Sightron SIII 6-24x50mm w/ MOA-2 reticle:  about $870
Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44 w/ EBR-1 MOA reticle, second focal plane:  about $600
Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50mm w/ EBR-1 MOA reticle, second focal plane:  about $700
Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50mm w/ EBR-1 MOA reticle, second focal plane:  about $750

Out of those, I like the Vortex scopes and the Sightron the best.  I've been very impressed with that Sightron SIII and the Vortex Viper PST 6-24.

Those prices are ballpark and you can probably do a little better.  Call Scott Berish of Liberty Optics 406-890-2714, tell him that you're taking a class from Shep, and go over your needs and price range with him.  He will get you the best scope for your money, not the most expensive one that he can get away with selling you.  He's a straight up guy and a class act.

OK I just checked my cheek-weld on the mauser and the stock is about 3/4 to 1" low.

What do you recommend as a riser?  I found several products on Brownells that might solve the problem.  Scope-EZE looks simple enough to install.

Edited to add:

Also found the Karsten adjustable piece which would obviously be more adjustable.  I could probably make one of those, but $50 seems when compared to the stick on being almost $40.
3/2/2011 4:05:08 PM EDT
[#31]
What kind of stock do you have?  My first recommendation would be a Karsten A Model adjustable cheekpiece but this calls for 2 holes to be drilled sideways through the stock.

If you don't go with the Karsten, then my recommendation would be an Eagle or Blackhawk stockpack.  You can build up under the stockpack with layers of closed cell foam (I cut mine from military-issue sleeping mats).

Count me in as another person who would love to take the class but does not have a rifle that will satisfy the requirements.

Any other loaners out there?

I am going with the Karsten.

Your stick is GTG, John. Are you shooting the same ammo that you were using when we zeroed last?  If so, and you haven't dicked around with the equipment, i.e., remounted the scope or somesuch, then you should be good to go. You might be off a small amount, which we can correct at the class. If you want, I'll be happy to meet you at the range some day prior to the class to confirm zero.

Would a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40 AO Riflescope DOA 600 Reticle work with these type classes?  I am trying to get set up for this or a future class and money is a factor.  Other option is the Elite 3200 10x mil dot with target turrets but prefer variable power scope.

Put my name on standby please.. Damn I am always a few days late for this.. I have a nice ass rifle.. that i need someone to show me how to use ;)

What do you recommend for "data book" and "calculator".

I need to at least finish out my kit so I will be ready to go for the next class. I have most of it.
4/16/2011 6:28:48 PM EDT
[#50]
I recommend the Storm Tactical, modular, rite in the rain, databook.  For a calculator, any cheap one that multiplies and divides.  Memory function is nice, but not necessary.

For rear bags, contact Vince or Janice Nylin of http://gunnersgear.com/.  Tell 'em you're taking a class from Shep, they'll treat ya right.

You're on the Standby List.
