A used Browning BAR is about the only thing I know of in your price range. It's rugged, reliable and as accurate as most semi autos. ?? While a $1,500 budget does limit you, it doesn't back you up that far. I myself am looking at my options for this very purpose, basically, and a DPMS with some upgrades on it can be had for less than that amount, and that's just brand new. I'm not so knowledgeable about what all is out there in the 308 arena of ARs, but $1,500 will definitely go further than that. To someone else's point about the ORC; I would think that, for the application and ranges the OP has specified, the ORC would not be the best choice from a standpoint of barrel length. Correct me if I am wrong, but I know that for 223, ORC means optic ready carbine. And on that note, this is also assuming that the OPs budget for the rifle is indeed for the rifle, sans optics. Throw in optics, all bets may be off. |

An AR10 lower MSRPs at $495 with an NM trigger, so you can get it for less than that at a dealer. I know where you can get an AR10A4 upper with a medium contour blackened stainless steel for $800 or so. Throw a Super Sniper 10x for $299 or a 3-9x Super Sniper for $599 and you are good to go. |

Whatever you get, I'd strongly urge it to take the SR25 pattern magazines. Given military contracts and such, I think this is going to be the dominant magazine pattern for some time, in addition to the most common parts across several platforms.
Sub 1500 for a .308, get a Bushmaster ORC and slap a Daniel Defense rail on it. If not an AR-10 type rifle, I'd say an M1A. |
| A buddy of mine bought the Bushmaster ORC in .308. All in all it was a good rifle and was fairly accurate, we were able to shoot 600 yard targets (max target at the range) consistently with a $50 scope bought at walmart. Its in your price range and leaves you some extra money to put some nice accessories on it. Enjoy your new rifle whichever you decide! |

What would it take to build or buy a mega machine MA-10 ? This the route I was gonna advise. That way you get what you really want. As far as how much, it reall all depends on the components you use. you could prolly do it with a stainless varmint contour for a fair chunk less than $1500. |
