[ARCHIVED THREAD] - How long will the schools be closed? (Page 1 of 2)

| What do the folks in the ATL area think? I'm pretty far south of my AO so I don't know what the roads are like in Fulton Co. right now. |
|
I would guess until Thursday. Things are melting a little today, but they will refreeze tonight. All the secondary roads and subdivisions around her haven't been cleared.
But I don't make the rules. It is supposed to get up to 45 degrees by weeks end so that should help a bit. |
|
This weather sucks...... School is closed so I can't eat in the DFAC and I can't get to the library to study. Can't go visit any friends down in Atlanta, which is what I WOULD do with all this unwanted deadtime. All book deliveries are stuck in the snow. Ugh..... I guess I have the Xbox and the treadmill and dumbbells.
|
|
Ha, thats one perk of going to a school where they force the cadets to live in barracks, They have to keep the DFAC open Although chicken nuggets and waffles are getting old I might chance the roads today to find something to keep my eyeballs from bugging out from playing too much COD Maybe go shoot

I believe that schools will reopen Friday. It is supposed to be sunny Wednesday, but still cold (below freezing) so melting will be minimal. Thursday is supposed to be sunny and above freezing. That is my story and I am sticking to it. :) A lot of it on the blacktop will sublimate in full sun if the air is dry. I've seen snow disappear off an asphalt driveway at 20F in full sun. |

I doubt Cherokee will be open at all this week. The county hasn't even started clearing secondary roads let alone subdivisions. Yeah I saw that on the news. I potentially have to work tomorrow, which involves a lot of driving between Marietta, Woodstock, and Holly Springs. I've got a feeling most of those back roads will still have ice on them. |

I was driving around today (AWD) and most of the roads had wet tracks and slush and ice.. If there is a hard freeze tonight the roads will not be good in the morning due to all the standing water freezing. If it just stays slushy things should be OK unless everybody gets on the road at the same time. |

I am still debating whether or not I will go in. I don't see the need to take unnecessary chances with a 26000 pound Freightliner just to go to the shop and hang around there all damn day. The bad thing is I will ed up burning thru all my vacation time or not get paid at all. |

I was really surprised by their reaction this time. Might have had something to do with an employee getting injured on the ice when they didn't close last year. Being closed costs them about $160k a day bottom line though and I need to keep my job, so I'll make the attempt tomorrow. |

I'm at a apartment complex and it's touch and go just getting to a main road. Luckily, I've got a great boss who understand it's not worth the risk of a car wreck for $8 an hour. Quoted:
Gettin' stir crazy. I went ahead and got coordinate for KSU and put it on my wrist...... In the morning I'm cutting through the woods on foot with my books to go study and store up some food. Studying for what? Technically, school hasn't started yet. Sure I may have online classes but until I step into my first class, I'm still on winter break as far as school work goes. |

I think that since they are getting paid anyway, teachers and school employees should be issued shovels and put to work. Sit and spin. You have less than no idea what your talking about. Teachers are paid on a 190 day contract. Which means they didn't get paid for the snow days. Instead they will be working their days off TEACHING to fulfill their contracts so they get paid. I was a teacher for 7.5 years you can consider me an expert on this. Full time school employees such as oh say bus mechanics and office workers work on a 235 day contract. It used to be 240 but budget cuts and all that you know... I am not getting paid for these three days at home. Instead I'll be working spring break OR taking precious vacation time so I get paid. I'm a bus mechanic. You can consider me an expert on this. Now I realize it's currently fashionable on AR15.com in GD to bash .gov workers for everything such as pay, pensions, and the like. But in the HTF it would be appreciated if you had a tiny bit of knowledge before trying to bash on teachers and other employees. Otherwise you look like an idiot. I won't call you an idiot because that would be a coc violation. But showing such a lack of knowledge does make you appear as one. |

Tech is closed for yet another day. Tech has really become a wuss school. ??? Really? @ Coastal, if that was directed at me, then yes, Tech's campus is closed Wednesday and was closed Monday and Tuesday. I know it was (and is), I'm a student, I just meant that maybe "wuss" is a strong word

I was expecting a somewhat rowdy crowd/pre-game parties (I am also a student at Tech - Mechanical Engineering) |

Yeah, its a different atmosphere than what you'll find at other schools where the sport is a little more celebrated amongst the student body, to put it lightly. Tech is the kind of place where you're about as likely to see some dude with a mismatched outfit that stinks of body odor walking with a bookbag as you are likely to see fans headed to the stadium on gameday. It doesn't mean that the real fans don't exist, it just means that there are fewer of us, who actually tailgate and then show up before kickoff. You just gotta know where to go, and no, I'm not "greek," either. ![]()

I don't think Cobb kids will be back in school until Tuesday.
The subdivision roads are *worse* than ever. The VSC finally kicked in going up the hill to my house. First time since the snow fell. Honda AWD is the cat's ass on snow and ice. Having more than the legal minimum of tread on your tires helps, too. There's no way the school buses can get up our hill and our hill is nothing special. I did the pilgrimage to work today and the main roads aren't bad except for the fucksticks driving 10mph in the left lane on dry pavement. I don't care if they drive in reverse on the right lane, just move over if you want to drive your Buick slower than you can walk. |
|
My county is closed again tomorrow as well as surrounding counties. My wife is a school teacher and we have two small children. Things are getting rough in the house as everyone is going stir crazy.I work from home most of the time so I'm stuck here with them too! :)
I have friends working in the local Sheriff's Office as well as others in surrounding counties and listening to the scanners, things are getting very rough out there. Be safe to everyone that has to be on the roads tonight, and thank you to everyone that chooses to do so in order to help others. |

Putnam starts back tomorrow, but some parents will have to transport their kids to a main road that has no ice or snow on it as the busses will not drive on icey roads. Most of the back roads here in Morgan Co. are still pretty slick in the shady places. IF we lived in Putnam (my wife teaches there so that's where our kids go) we would have to drive our kids about 4 miles to get them to a road that is ice free. This oughta be interesting to see how many pissed off parents there are, OR how many kids are just absent tomorrow.
Hopefully the roads in the Putnam backwoods look better than the ones here in Morgan..... |

Tech is closed for yet another day. Tech has really become a wuss school. ??? Really? Yes. Closing for multiple days due to snow/ice. All kinds of liberal artsy/fartsy crap. Significant grade inflation. Not the hard core engineering school it used to be. When my wife and I went to Tech...This sort of stuff was unheard of. Wife - BEEE & Myself - MSEE and PhD in EE (Just to let you know that I was a Tech student) |
| I told my wife last night that I doubt they'll have school up here tomorrow (Friday) either. Kids have been out for 4 days, and will be out Monday. They'll want to be extra "safe" to make sure nothing happens to the kiddies. A few years ago the Superintendent of the Schools up here had school on a questionable day and there were lots of kids getting into accidents while trying to drive to school. Since then, they have been overly cautious. |

Since then, they have been overly cautious. I agree. There are lots of minor surface streets that are still covered in ice and buses will have trouble getting to the kids (See CDtracing's pictures of his street). But with the entire week off, they SHOULD cancel Monday as a holiday and have school on Monday. There is talk of USPS delivering on Monday to catch up on the volume. |
| I have been out over most of Cherokee and some of Cobb today and I would say tomorrow will be a toss up. A few sides roads are spoty, but they pick up so many kids at entrances of subdivisions they don't have to drive into them. Alot of the schools I went by the lots were clear and some had folks out throwing salt. |

I had to get out again today for work. I'm not sure what's worse, the ice, or the idiots on the road.
This one broad, in her mini van, thought it'd be smarter to drive on the ice crusted snow instead of on the wheel areas where other cars had been. At full speed. She almost ran into as she was sliding along the ice. Later that day, I was on a very dry section of Hwy 5 near I75 and the person in front of me slammed on their breaks when they encountered a patch of very dangerous liquid water.
It looks like to me that most of the major roads that got any sun are fine, but any of the back roads that didn't get a lot of sun will still have ice on them. |

I saw black ice (that looks like pavement) coming back tonight. The kind that sends my traction control into nuke it stage. It's a first this week. Should be resolved tomorrow afternoon but be careful in the morning. Yeah I started to see that last night, say around 6 or 7PM. I do hope everything gets more tolerable tomorrow. |
