Help a Northerner understand why people run out and buy bread and milk when the threat of snow rears it's ugly head.
1/7/2011 7:31:44 PM EDT
[#1]
Someone explained to me that it's a grocery store plot since those are perishable items that they lose money on if they have to close for snow.

But I honestly like bread and milk, and other things. It'd be among the things I buy.

I work for the transportation arm of a major grocery store chain and it's not a plot.  People panic buy this stuff.  We were getting "emergency" milk orders all night tonight in preparation.

Hmm....

...Maybe it's the same thought though. Perishable things in the household that you can't already have stockpiled, except for powder milk and flour to make bread.

When snowed in French toast is a must!

Honestly I have no idea why... But it's no joke go to the store Sunday and the shelves will be bare!

I've lived here all my life and I don't understand.

The snow/ inclement weather food in my family is monkeybread.
1/7/2011 8:31:30 PM EDT
[#7]
Because my milk expired on the 6th and all I have is end pieces of bread.
1/7/2011 8:36:49 PM EDT
[#8]
There are other items I would stockpile.  If I  can get the grill going I am good.
1/7/2011 10:52:30 PM EDT

I also can't understand why these people don't have enough food in their houses to get them through the one day that the snow might shut us down.
1/7/2011 11:46:59 PM EDT
[#10]
LOL I dont get it either... and when we get a few inches of snow, its not like I will be out of food for the next few days that the snow hits. I actually went grocery shopping a few days ago, not bc of this weather (actually didnt hear about it yet) but bc I was actually out of food.

LOL

And because if you're snowed in your kids are home and working up quite an appetite playing in the snow

You have to buy groceries for a snow day like you shop for summer when the kids are out of school.

yep.  I hit Kroger at 0600 and got the ubiquitous milk and bread, and charcoal so this is what is on my grill RIGHT NOW.  what have you guys done this morning?

You left out toilet tissue.

Not sure why the bread and milk, maybe just preference. I prefer to check stock of eggs, breakfast sausage, steak and beer.

Obviously, when people are stuck at home they eat at home.  We're usually stocked pretty good as we don't eat out very often like a lot of families. Some are probably living on a diet of campbells soup.  I'd bet those families that eat out every night are quite panicked.  Well, maybe not.  They probably have a freezer full of TV dinners too.

There's just no substitute for preparedness.... certain things just should never run out... ammo, mags, spare parts, fully stocked freezer, beer, grill, extra propane, generator, fuel for said generator, and a trusty Coleman lantern.... what else do you really need?

It is nice to have a stocked freezer..however here in north georgia my biggest concern
Is not running out of food.. Or not being able to drive because i got that covered for sure.
It is not having power. Some of the terrain that the lines run through is very rough. And at times almost impossible
To get to. Even this wouldnt concern me, but i have a 1year old. So it is a minor concern.

A note on the frozen food. I try to keep a stock of non perishables. No power = the frozen stuff can ruin and also no water from the well. So i try not to open the fridge/freezer just my .02 cents

Because we have like one salt truck in the entire state.  Y'all northerners are used to the weather and equipped for it with all your snow plows, salt trucks, and labor force behind it all.  We are not and purchasing the equipment and paying to maintain it would mostly be a waste if we only use it like twice a decade. So if something happens people run around freaking out, but still try to drive like their prius is actually a Porsche..and then they end up in ditches and high ways get closed down.

I can't believe that none of ya'll good Southerners knew the correct answer!

It's a ritual offering to the snow Gods so that they will smile upon us and bring us lots of the white fluffly stuff!!!!!

Kinda like the injuns used to do a raindance to bring rain during a drought.

Buying bread and milk is the South's modern day snowdance.

And now you know why Southerners buy bread and milk when there is at least a 2% chance of snow, 'cuz the more bread and milk you buy, the better the chance of snow!

1/8/2011 11:03:13 AM EDT
[#29]
because when you're freezing your ass off eating snow ice cream makes the most sense to do!!!!

The other reason I can think of is along with wide spread power outages, inexperienced people morons crashing cars at any place brakes must be used........ it is just nice to sit on  the front porch eating little snack sandwiches and drinking whats left of the the milk while watching all the chaos and  idiocy happening in the streets before you

I get a chuckle out the big tough dudes driving their knarly customized monster trucks gingerly through the even lightest dusting of snow, much like a bunch of elephants running around their tippy toes.

[#31]
ok so I gotta admit, I had to go get milk today.....we normally buy milk on saturday b/c we are out by then.  the three of us drink 2 gallons a week......

but I did  pick up some nice freshly cut T-bones to throw on the grill tonight!

snow men look better with extra help of the milk to help in color and patches of bread for the dark spots

As far as power thats why you get one of these,

We went to the grocery store to pick up a couple of household stuff, not thinking about the snow "run" on milk and bread.  We noticed the milk were just about all out, half the bread were gone but the most interesting thing was, the meat department was empty.  So add meat to the list of item.

Depends on how many women you have in the house. A single male will use a 4 pack every 2 to 3 months.

Add 1 female to the equation and you end up buying a 24 pack per month. More women and it goes up exponentially.

That still doesn't explain the bread and milk.  I would understand canned vegetables or pouches of tuna.
