I'm heading down to FL from VA over Christmas and am thinking of trying a different route. I absolutely can't stand driving on 95, so I'm thinking on cutting from Columbia, SC down to Augusta, then heading through Waynesboro, Statesboro, Claxton, Glennville, and continuing on south on 23.
According to Googlemaps, taking this route will only add 45 minutes to my trip, which is fine by me...anything to keep me from the I-95 madness. Plus, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the countryside. So, I'm asking y'all who live there...is this a stupid idea? Thanks! |

Definitely a better way to see the countryside.Just watch out for small town speed traps. The speed traps are a concern, but I'd rather take my chances than drive down 95 during Christmas traffic. all I got is http://www.speedtrap.org/state/11/Georgia can give you a good idea of the route you plan to take! |

| I drive from Statesboro to Augusta all the time, being a GSU student who's hometown is Augusta. Highway 25 isn't bad at all. They've been expanding it to a 4 lane highway and just recently finished it. They haven't changed the speed limit though. It's listed as 55mph. Several speed traps, especially Bulloch County. It's very scenic, lots of farms and countryside. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with. |

I'll wave when you come through Claxton I'd tell ya to look for me, but I'm renting a car a don't know what I'll be drivin'. I know...I'll honk the whole way through town. Look for a pissed off redhead in the passenger seat LOL! I've drove that same road many times. I was born and raised right across the GA/FL line! Not to bad of a road to travel. |

A good number of small towns have bypasses that go around the true center of the city, if you want to see the small towns, avoid the bypasses. Otherwise it's pine trees and cotton fields. |

i'd never choose that route over 95. As far as scenery goes, there isn't much to look at on your route. 95 through georgia actually passes over some beautiful wetlands/marshes. I've driven 95 during the Christmas rush several times...never again. It wouldn't be so bad if they would finish that construction. |

That wouldn't be a bad route to take. 25 is 4-lane all the way now and by-passes most of the towns that used to slow you down. Just try not to hit Augusta during drive time, traffic is pretty bad for a not so big town. Pulling out of Roanoke around 3am, I figure hitting Augusta 9:30 / 10-ish. |

A fellow caver, welcome to GA I really need to come to TAG. just dont let him convince you to go to Ulla (or what ever its called). when a small shovel to dig your way through is required it really makes you wonder if you made the right decision.... |

Shouldn't be to bad if you take the 520 loop (Palmetto Pkwy) on the North Augusta side around to 25.

Speed limits drop down to 35 or even 25 through a lot of them. |

i don't see anything wrong with this. you will get more scenery.......of course you cant drive eighty, but you could drive maybe six or seven miles over the speed limit and do OK. and you are right ninety five will be terrible. He can do 9 over, except in school zones, residential areas, and historic zones, and local cops using any kind of speed detection device can't do anything about it. Now, they can pace you, but most people would notice that. Also, unmarked cars are not to be used if their assignment is traffic control. That's not to say that an unmarked car can't pull you over if you are being really stupid. |

Sounds to me like you've already made up your mind, just wanted some confirmation. DO IT! I'm a backroads, scenic route guy myself. I went to school at the real GSU and got sick and tired of driving down I-16 to Statesboro, so went out from metro ATL to I-20, to Warrenton, down to Waynesboro, Millen to Statesboro. MUCH more relaxing drive! That last stretch always did tick me off b/c it was too damn straight of a road. Anyway, someone else did hit the nail on the head when they said pines and cotton fields. Maybe the occaisional soybean field as well |

I've been traveling that area almost 16 years and there is always construction. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
