Whats the minimum length for a shotgun? Do you measure from the stock, grip, or the breech?

Thanks for all your help.

I have never seen a minimum length of the actual shotgun be required, but the barrel length needs to be at least 18 inches.  If you satisfy the barrel requirement, it desn't matter how long your stock is, or if you even have a stock.

Yes it definitely does matter, there is a minimum OAL of 26" and going below that puts you in NFA territory.

This usually isn't a problem with pumps and semis, the action adds a good bit to the overall length.

ETA: My 18½" Maverick will meet legal minimum length without its stock or pistol grip attached, not that I'd want to shoot it that way...

I thought he was referring to a traditional shotgun and not an SBS or AOW.  That is different. I appologize if I didn't read into the question a little more.

I couldn't get any of my shotguns down to under 26" unless I chopped the barrel down significantly.

Based on my recent research it is 18" measured inside the barrel to the closed bolt face.  That is how i was told the BATF does it.  That doesn't take into account OAL though. Folding stock on my newly converted Saiga takes care of that though.

I even cut a single shot to 18 inch barrel and OAL is till like 32 inches.

I don't think OAL is often a problem when cutting barrels, especially on pumps and semi's
