I'm going to OR for the weekend and I am debating taking a weapon with me. How much of a hassle is it? What are the chances of some sticky fingers walking off with it?

Honestly dude if it's for the weekend I'd leave it behind. Too much hassle. If you're checking baggage put a decent folder in there, if not then pick something up when you get there.

Thought about that, we'll be doing some hiking and would like something with a little more reach than my benchmade.

Lockable case, declared when you get there. Place the lockable case in a lockable suitcase. They will inspect the suitcase and and zip tie it shut. Ammo should be in a separate lockable case. Once you get the routine down, it isn't too bad.

Locking case inside your suitcase, non-TSA locks on suitcase and pistol case, declare it when you check in, they'll give you a card to fill out stating that the firearm is unloaded, then send you to the oversize luggage line to get x-rayed/inspected.  Give yourself an extra fifteen to twenty minutes to deal with all of that.  I flew out to Utah in June with four handguns and a rifle with no problems (handguns cased in luggage and a Pelican case with handguns and rifle).  I actually prefer to fly with a firearm, it means TSA has to have a DAMNED good reason to search my luggage when I'm not present, and I CAN'T use TSA compliant locks, by law :-)

Ok that leads to, what makes a lock a non-TSA lock?

Most of the master locks are not TSA compliant.  Usually only the small suitcase sized locks are TSA friendly.

I have flown with a rifle and it isn't bad.  If you bring ammo, it has to be in the original manufacturers boxes as they usually forbid ammo in plastic cases, or loose ammo.  Ammo is supposed to be separated in a separate locked container.

I never had any issues with my rifles being touched or stolen.  Just make sure you have a good case like  an SKB, pelican, or storm case that can take a beating.  It seems like the baggage handlers really put it through its paces once in a while.

Delta is very gun friendly after you declare it and have it inspected.

I started out with simple levitation. Once I was able to jump off my roof and fly, it wasn't much harder with a gun in my hand.
In all seriousness, it isn't too much of a hassle to check firearms.

Why do you say this? There is nothing that makrs that bag as different than any others.

Yes, there is.  It gets searched separately, in my presence (since I have to unlock it for them), the law requires that it be securely locked, so TSA can't just snoop like they can with regular luggage with the TSA locks.  They have a higher legal barrier to meet when it comes to searching my luggage since a) it's already been searched and b) it can't legally be left unlocked and c) I can't legally use TSA-compliant locks.

I once had a video camera stolen by the TSA, so the non-tsa locks thing is definitely a good thing.

I have both flown with guns and shipped them either works. The basics are covered above. expect an extra 15-20 minutes on check in . If you really want an extra level of handing buy the airline offered insurance it is pricey but they make damn sure your bag arrives when they have an interest in it.

I always pack cameras and valuable stuff in my carry on luggage.  Plus at least a change of clothes, cause you never know when a bag will make it to your destination late or never.

TSA is all over the place about guns; no two airports are the same, nor one airport the same on any given day.

That is the nature of hiring from the bottom of the evolutionary barrel.

I always take a handgun with me when I travel, especially to shitholes like Tucson, Dallas, Houston, Memphis, Jackson, etc. It's worth the extra 20 minutes.

Eh, that wasn't too bad at all. The ladies involved were both courteous and helpful. US Airways fwiw. Let's see if it arrives at PDX with me.

I've flown with a long gun a couple of times, and every time my luggage was waiting for me at the carousel with someone by the time I could get there from the plane. YMMV

Flying into SLC in May there was nothing done differently about my Pelican case, flying back into Atlanta, they sent it to the oversized luggage area where I had to show my ticket to get it, not a problem EXCEPT they didn't tell me, I had to figure it out on my own after sitting at the luggage carousel until it stopped moving.
