It's time to put up a fence. GSD puppy inbound, the heat is expected in 6 to 8 weeks. I'm looking at 6' privacy fence, around 180 feet with two gates.
What's a reasonable price for an install, per linear foot? |

I saw my half-breed GSD scale a 7' concrete block wall. Luckily there was no glass embedded at the top or he would have been dogmeat.
Chain link will not hold a heat-inspired dog in. I've had two GSD, one pure German line. The half-breed was too smart for his own good, the German dog was crazy smart. It took less than half a day to housebreak him. He shit on the carpet, I said no, showed him outside and that was it. I loved that dog––he would catch a whammo tossed downhill about 200 yards for hours––but he needed space. When I moved out into an efficiency apt for college he couldn't come with and he wasn't about to abide by my mom's instruction. I gave him up to a farmer who had 2,000 acres and promised to take care of him. |
| I just put a 6 foot fence at the house around 450' worth with 2 12' gates I did all the work myself (its alot of work by the way). Total cost for lumber, hardware, cement, budlite, was a hair over $2500. I used landscape timbers for post with 4X4 corner and center of each run post. 2X4X8 running boards and the 5/8X6X6 pickets. I used 6X6X8 for my gate post. I also used at 40lbs of cement post and 80lbs on the 4x4's and 6X6's. It took me 2 weeks to complete with help from a buddy. Next time I will gladly pay someone else to do it. |

WL did you use the prefab 8' sence sections or did you completely build it your self? what do you mean "landscape timbers? also how did you dig the holes? an auger or a PHD? I have seen augers on Craigs list for like $200. |

The prefab sections don't save much time if you have a nail gun and unless your backyard is flat, they are a pain in the ass.
I think the materials at home depot will be about 1/3 to 1/2 of what an installed fence will cost. Chainlinks were cheap years ago but when steel prices shot up, so did they. I used an $80 Harbor freight nail gun and it worked like a champ. |

Quoted: HOA covenant specifies either 6' vinyl or 4' vinyl picket fence, which would hardly keep a masculine GSD corralled while I can't be home. I wish I could put in a shadowbox fence and whitewash it, but it doesn't look like that's a possibility. electrify it.... when you have zing you don't need brawn. |

I built it completly slat for slat. I used the pressure treated landscape timbers you get at lowes they are normally around $2.98 a piece and they are basicly 4X4 with rounded corners. It saved me a ton of cash and they have held up just fine. I dug my holes with a gas powered hand auger, just went up to the rental place and got it for $30 for 2 days. Dug all my holes and set my post over the weekend let the cement set up came back shot up the running boards then decked the fence. Its not hard just back breaking digging the dang holes and pouring cement. Rent or borrow a nail gun if you dont own one they save alot of time and busted thumbs. I also did the dog kennel inside the fence I have 2 kennels side by side that are 8X16 with a 6X12 shelter built over the dog houses. I did this so if I have a cook out or little kids come over I can put the dogs up so I dont have to worry about them jumping on people or stealing my dang burger again.
the electric fence idea has merit put up your vinyl fence and put one of the underground fences about 6 inches inside the fence. They have a shock width of about 3 to 4 feet depending on brand and they give the warning beeb at about 6ft. This would keep the pup from digging out and from trying to jump out. I will say they work great but they still bark at people when they walk by thats why I had to do the privacy fence. |

OMG! HOA covenant? http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee166/puffyfish50/blownfinger.jpg You poor man...I had no idea you lived in such hell.
We'll see. I'm trying to talk the developer into letting me preside over the HOA, since I was the first to buy in the neighborhood, and the first to park a police vehicle in the driveway. |
