I'm leaving the country for at least 1 month and possibly up to 2 months.  I don't want to leave my class III items in my home because I don't own a safe.  Aside from buying a safe, what are my options for storage?  Safe deposit box?  How about a local class III dealer if they were willing to keep them in their safe?

I believe the above will work but you can call NFA and ask

Depending on the value I would just make a Key locked closet, hide them, or buy a safe. Treat them like you would cash. I would be comfortable locking $500 up in a closet but not $5000.

Do you have a lockable rifle case and a trusted friend or family member?  Lock it in a case so the person cannot access it and store it with a trusted friend or family member.

I watch them for you. Granted they might be a little dirtier when you get them back.

I'd just buy a safe and keep it at your house. Make sure you nail it to the ground.

Contact the AFT. I would not go the friend route since it could be seen as an illegal transfer. If it goes thru a CLass 3 dealer they may have to inventory it. That means another transfer stamp. If possible the dealer you bought it from would be the best bet since his name is on the paperwork. I would call Ben at Autreys Armory he is very knowledgeable class 3 dealer.

You could rent a storeage area from one of those companies who rent them by the month. Just make sure that your company choice
is one that is enclosed by a fence and entrance is controlled by a card and password.

You could drop it off for "repair" at a class 3 dealer without any extra paperwork.  Some will recommend completing a Form 5 if it is going to be there for a long amount of time.

The dealer will probably charge you a "storage fee" to keep it on his books while you are gone since he will be responsible for it.

Will a local PD or Sheriff's Office store it for safe keeping?

You will need to call your local Dept but I seriously doubt it unless you commit a crime with said weapon but then you may have a hard time getting it back.

No need for the Form 5 anymore.  ATF doesn't care as long as the items are logged into the dealer's books.

The ATF actually has a FAQ that answers a question that is very similar to the one you are asking:

Q: If an individual is changing his or her State of residence and the individual’s application to transport the NFA firearm cannot be approved because of a prohibition in the new State, what options does a lawful possessor have?

NFA firearms may be left in a safe deposit box in his or her former State of residence. Also, the firearm could be left or stored in the former State of residence at the house of a friend or relative in a locked room or container to which only the registered owner has a key. The friend or relative should be supplied with a copy of the registration forms and a letter from the owner authorizing storage of the firearm at that location.

The firearms may also be transferred under the procedures referred to in “What are the required transfer procedures for an individual who is not qualified as a manufacturer, importer, or dealer of NFA firearms?” or abandoned to ATF.
