I've never been to Atlanta –– never been to Georgia except on 95.

The week after Fourth of July I'll be attending the USA Climbing national championships at the Stone Summit Climbing Gym, which is near the intersection of 85 and 285.  The competition hotels are all near the Northlake Mall on 285.

Anything I ought to be aware of in those areas?  How's traffic around 7:00-7:30AM on weekday mornings between those two locations?

The Northlake area is not the worst area in Atlanta, but it still has it's ghettoness to it.  Just lock up your vehicle when you are away from it and don't leave any valuables in it.

As far as the traffic goes, if you are northbound from the Northlake area headed on 285 to 85 then you are in for some serious traffic.  Southbound, not so bad.

Best of luck my friend.

Leaving after 730 is bad. 700 is not so bad. Getting back is different story.  Of course it is all relative.

School is out so congestion is down 50% for some reason.

On the site I've looked at, yes (I hold Colorado and Utah permits).  But carrying at the gym is not going to work for me, and off-body carry there would be sketchy (separation from bag, etc.)

It'll have to be a lock-it-in-car situation.  And that . . . a while back nationals were in Sacramento in a shithole area of town with homeless people everywhere and cars outside the main lot getting screwed with.  Hence my questions.  I know NOTHING about Atlanta except that

1. The Olympics were there.

2. It's gonna be hot.

3. Coca-Cola is based there (I have no idea why I know this).

Utah is gtg.

We have open carry and cc. I keep my guard up anywhere inside the perimeter. Some OTP places are bad, but generally better. I mainly know the west side so I'm not the best guy to ask what to do...

I wouldn't take my family to that area.  My first house was almost exactly between Tucker and the 85/285 intersection (Spaghetti Junction) - it's not as bad as other areas in Atlanta, but exercise caution.  Best of luck in the competition.  If the hotels are full, you may want to try some in the "perimeter" area near Ashford Dunwoody/285 or GA400/285.  You should be able to make it in the same amount of time as you could from Northlake, but expect to pay more for a room in that area.

It's in Dekalb County on the ATL perimeter. It's pretty Ghetto, lots of ho's, thugs and donks (and hookers, pimps and junkies).  As others said, it's not the worst place, but your probably not more than a block from a crack rock when you are down there. Auto smash-n-grabs arent out of the question, nor is the threat of robbery if you make stupid decisions about coming and going.

Here's a crime map (1 week plotting)

During the weekday and during business hours its not bad. After 1700 or on the weekends all bets are off.
