I'm working a photo convention this weekend in the big city of Albany and want to know if there are any gun stores worth seeing or a range near by?
I drive down & set up in one day, work a trade show for 2 days, day off then dinner awards show that night.  Looks like my day off pig hunt is not going to happen.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Be very careful in Albany.

This is decent advice. The crime rate here has shot up recently and it was never that great to begin with. There are a couple of gun stores in town but nothing too spectacular. Backwoods Outdoors probably has the best selection in town but even they don't have very much. Solo Archery has a gun counter with occaisional good guns but the staff leaves much to be desired.

My convention hotel is the Hilton on S Front Street & the hotel I'm staying at is Days Inn on Oglethorpe, couple blocks west of the Hilton.
So how bad is this neighborhood?

Almost as bad as it gets in Albany. Just a few blocks from crack town, walking distance for a crackhead looking to rob somebody. Serious gang activity in the area. Be very careful is good advice, take it. I haven't been there in a few years, but Solo Archery used to have an indoor archery and pistol range, don't know if they still do pistols or not. Oglethorpe Lounge is an ok bar nearby. Albany is my hometown, I hate it.

It's next to some shitty neighborhoods but it isn't close to being as bad as it gets in Albany. All of Albany is shitty. From one end to the other, when you hit the city limits, you are in the hood or hood-adjacent. You may want to consider moving your accomodations to the Riverfront Hilton where your convention is or to one of the hotels on Dawson Rd near the mall, which are significantly nicer than anything you'll find in  East Albany.

Days Inn on Oglethorpe is bad news.
I am not exaggerating.  BGs rent the rooms for drug transactions.  They will kick in the doors.  Barricade your door.  Have complete situational awareness.  Do NOT leave anything of value in your car.
I wish you had posted prior to your trip.  We would have steered you away from the Days Inn.
I will try to find some links to convince you.
I'll be back.  Do not move.

edit:  Sorry for the scare.  I had the Days Inn (former Holiday Inn) mixed up with a worse hotel in the other direction on Oglethorpe.  So just cut what I said in half.   Anything on the other end of Oglethorpe East of the river is really bad news.  Further West on Oglethorpe will start resembling Mogadishu, Somalia.  You are in a somewhat benign zone of Oglethorpe.

Here is where you are staying and here is the link for some reviews.  There is nothing about crime posted in the reviews, so I guess new management has made an effort.  BTW when reading the reviews, note that the new management took over in 2008.  I hope you got one of the good rooms.    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g29192-d86071-Reviews-Days_Inn_Downtown-Albany_Georgia.html#REVIEWS

Personally, I would not go anywhere on Oglethorpe or downtown in the Hilton area after dark thirty.  If there is no choice, I would be packing.  Please be situationally aware.

BTW, I concur with the Joker's post.  The two gun places are Backwoods Outdoors on Hwy 19 North, towards Leesburg. or Solo Archery on Philema Rd.

Great!  Just effing great.
So OC'ing my AR is about the only way to navigate Oglethorpe after dark?

I did look up Dawson road towards the mall at the Hampton Inn or the Jamison in...so whats the consensus about this area?

Albany is actually mine and my parents home town and still have alot of family living there.  I talk with some family I have down there and they tell me there is like 30 something active gangs in the area.  It's sad cause when I was a kid I rode bikes for miles following the storm drain canals to the retention ponds to fish. Last I went down to the old neighborhood it was the hood.

Well I made it.
So far so good...
no blood no foul play on
.

Drive down w/ very little rain, unloaded & set up my booth in about 4hrs, about to shower up & look for food & beer with friends.

Great.

In other news, there was a pretty good brawl in the park across the street from the Hilton an hour or two ago. APD was hearding about 200 people away from the area when I went down there on a call.

Here is the story on the brawl that Joker mentioned.  http://www.walb.com/Global/story.asp?S=12370371

It's was across the street from the Hilton, your event venue.

Read the comments at the bottom of the news story if you want to read between the lines.
Watch your six.  Welcome to Albany.

Again just freaking great.

After leaving the Hilton after setting up I did notice the 'crowd' had migrated from riverside of the convention center to riverside just north of the Hilton.  So I'm sure some of the more upstanding individuals became a bit agitated and wanted to tussle.

My Dublin customer can't make my show thus can't take me on the pig hunt on Tuesday.
So I'm going to take my AR to the Chickamawhatsitsname WMA just west of Albany and get a little trigger time before Eric's class.  I plan on heading out about mid-day Tuesday.  My Canon training rep is going with me...so any local ARfcommers want to come along?

ETA  I just read the article.  I left the Hilton at 6pm...just before the Brawl at Turtle Park.
