Just added HBO so I could watch The Pacific, which starts tonight. If it's anywhere near as good as band of brothers, it will be well worth the $7.95 a month!
On a side note, I was going through my new HBO channels and landed on Bill Maher. Wow. I've read tales of his idiocy and douchbagness, but had not ever seen a show. It took me about 3 minutes to get pissed off. I hate that I just put some money in his pocket. |

Do you have cable or satellite? |

My broke ass has no HBO, parents back home are recording it on the DVR, though. Does anyone know if they going to offer the episodes for streaming online after they air like some other networks do with their shows? wouldn't count on it... why would anybody pay a subscription fee if they just gave it away on-line? |

I was a little bit disappointed.
I typed a long opinion and erased it because it would probably be read as disrespect for the efforts and sacrifices of the Marines. (maybe not read that way in an HTF?) The logistical and strategic perspective of the campaign is more interesting to me although I'll continue to watch the series for what is sure to be some good battle reenactments. There wasn't enough battle last night, but it'll probably get better in that regard. Why the bodies of Japanese soldiers were strewn on the beach the morning after the battle is quite interesting. What put them there ranges from the pretentiousness of the Japanese command ('victory disease' they call it in retrospect) and the rivalry between the IJN and IJA, to just plain stupidity. Guadacanal by Richard B. Frank is a very good stratigic and logistical rehashing of the minute details of the campaign as well as the reasoning and circumstances of decisions from platoon level commanders to theater commanders. How and why the rivalry between the IJN and the IJA poisoned the Japanese war effort is particularly interesting. The effect of that rivalry really started to be felt at Guadacanal and got worae as the war progressed. The show last night just barely touched on the emotion of the US Marines to find our Navy gone the morning after the battle, but how and why the IJN supported the IJA so poorly during the campaign had far-far greater consequences, both in lives lost and the effect on their overall war effort. |

| I was expecting a little more build up to the sailing across the ocean, ala Band of Brothers. I guess they figured that it wouldn't work as well. But the Marines saw action in the south Pacific much earlier than the Army did in Europe. I still enjoyed it. It'll be interesting to see how they handle the retaking of the Philippines and then Iwo Jima. |

I would like to read your deleted opinion and I even promise not get mad unless you say something bad about Chesty
I have seen interviews with survivors from Guadalcanal and they still voice a great deal of anger towards Admirals Fletcher and Turner. It was a tough call to make but in hindsight, it was the correct decision even if cost many Marines and Sailors their lives. It will be interesting to see if/how the movie portrays the horrific actions of the IJA and IJN. Early in BOB, an American killed a bunch of German prisoners. Later in the series, Easy Company liberated a Concentration Camp. It was powerful episode. Monk |
