| Im planning on going backpacking tomorrow and was wondering if there were any laws prohibiting carrying a rifle in or on your backpack. If it matters, we dont plan on going on trails. We're just gonna head off from my buddies cabin with a compass and map in hand. |

My first thought...is it all your buddy's property that you'll be on? If so then does he have a problem w/ you toting a rifle?
Will you be crossing over fences? Will you then be walking on WMA, State Parks, National Parks land? If so then you gotta play by their rules. Or will you be on private property? If so do you know the owner? Will they know your toting a rifle? Will they mind you toting a rifle? Will you be hunting w/ said rifle on any or the above property? If so then you gotta play by GA DNR rules. just my thoughts...I'd hate for your little walk about to turn into a REAL expensive learning lesson...again just my thoughts 7mm |
| Check the rules for where you will be hiking. In most National Forest (for example) you can carry a rifle if you are hunting game that is in season. If that is the case, get a hunting license, and carry the appropriate gun and ammo. Carrying a 30.06 and saying you are hunting squirrels won’t cut it. Carrying a 30.06 and saying you are hunting wild boar might be accepted. |

That is correct on public lands. Wild hogs can only be hunted during small game season with small game weapons. Rimfires, archery, muzzleloader, and shotguns with shot size of no larger then #2. Wild hogs can be hunted on most public lands during deer season as well and during those times legal deer weapons can be used. Most people that hunt hogs on the WMA's during small game season use thier muzzleloaders. GON had a good article on this very topic a few months ago. On private lands..... you can do pretty much whatever you want with whatever you want to hogs with permission. |

Go to the NF outside WMA and carry a .223 all day long right now. I'd have to re-read about the WMA, but yotes can be hunted year round in NF outside of WMA's. I'm not completely sure about NF lands but WMA's you can only use what weapons are allowed for the season that is open. And centerfire rifles are not allowed during small game season. (which ends on this Sunday the 28th) It is also my understanding that on WMA's only firearms may be carried during listed hunting seasons. And that year round hunting for coyotes, hogs, non-native species is not currently allowed outside of regular seasons. There are places in Georgia that the public can hunt hogs almost year-round. Fort Stewart is one place and I believe they allow almost year round hunting of hogs. And I have killed some good ones down there during deer season too. Just have to go on base and get your permit and use the phone system to check in and check out. |
