Well an assignment finally came my way and I'll be PCS'ing Minot for Robins sometime around March or April. Has anyone that has been stationed there or is familiar with the base give me some sitrep about it? Things to do in the area, housing, etc.

The nearest town, Warner Robins, was Businessweek's best place in Georgia to raise your kids and is a pretty safe place.  The housing market didn't collapse as bad as most areas but there are plenty of houses on the market.  The schools in Houston (HOUSE TON) county are pretty good.  We had a state football cahpion team a couple years ago and won the Little League World Series in 2007.  Atlanta is 90 minutes away and has sports, museums, amusement parks and a zoo.  The nearest big city, Macon, has museums, several live theaters, and is the hub of local night life (both good and bad).  What career field are you and what unit will you be in?  I was first stationed at Robins in 1988, had 3 assignments here and now I'm a DOD civilian.  PM me if you have any questions.

Your right about it being a great place for kids to grow up. My dad liked so much that after he got out of the AirForce he stayed and because a cop.

I had a blast growing up their. We always had something to do and could play/explore all day and night.

My wife and I were thinking about moving back now that we have kids.

I'm out at AFRC and have been here three years.  Love the area.  Depending on what your situation, South of the base is great!  The just opened a new high school and there are several new/newer schools.  You can also PM me with questions too.

If you grew up in the hood you'd still think it was a dump.

i was the structural engineer for the high school, and there is no doubt it is a nice place.  my parents live pretty close to there, and have been happy for the most part since moving about 15 years ago.

Being a resident of Macon, I can well tell you that it isn't the hub of anything but a pile of shit.  Stay in Warner Robins, Macon is getting close to being Detroit.

Oddly I grew up in Warren, MI - which is about 20 miles outside of Detroit lol. Also lived in Grand Blanc, which is pretty much the outskirts of Flint.

My wife wants to stay in base housing, which I believe is privatized there? Were going to look into it more, but if we do decide to rent something we'll most likely stay in Warner Robins. Thanks for all of the advice so far everyone, I can't wait to move down here.

Warner Robins is a nice midsized town with good schools as everyone mentioned. There's a reason that many AF guys retire there.

Nearest public range is in Hawkinsville at the Ocmulgee Widlife Management Area if you want to shoot for free, but it ain't too nice. I'd recommend joining Marion Road Gun Club (www.marionroad.com) east of Macon. Nice club and several Arfcommers shoot there.

Been in the area all my life.  It's a great town BUT it is quickly turning into a overflow for Macon crime

OMG NO!  Most of the housing is off base in the bad part of town.

Good market to buy here.  I live in Kathleen and am 9 miles to the back gate.  Plenty of rentals around as well.  You should get your 10 days and come down for a visit.  Let me know when you are in town and I'll give you a quick tour.

We really need to get together sometime.  I can't live more than a couple of miles from you.

To OP, there's a lot of nice property south of the base in semi rural areas.  I'll second Marion Road Gun Club.  It's about 35 miles away.  I just joined last month, it's a nice place and all the people I've met so far are friendly

[Hijack] I'm over in Southern Trace.  Let me know next time you are going to Marion.  I have no idea where it is and am interested in joining them. [/Hijack]

Well it sounds like south of the base is the safest and nicest place to be, so I will keep that in mind - thank you everyone for the suggestions. I will have to get on the AHRN site and look around at some rentals. My BAH is going to be $1005 a month.

Bass Pro shop is right off the highway so you don't have to go into any of the questionable parts of the city.
