Egg crate or smooth surface?
How thick?

Dad used to have an upholstery shop and has a metric ass ton of foam pieces laying around.
It's yellow/orange not pretty black like a new one, but I can assure you it works in converting such a project

2 pieces 1.5" thick each 12" wide 16.5" long.

I think I'd prefer flat...?

On a similar project I used the foam out of an old couch cushion.  It was really thick so it filled a large case.

Let me see what I can do, shouldn't be an issue.
I can probably have it for you next week.

Traveling early in the week, will be back by Wed.

ETA: I agree....I hate egg crate.

I went to Joanne fabric and got some. Its not the open cell foam like I wanted.

I have 4-5 dry boxes (pelican like) that was used for equipment that is the perfect size for the broke down SBR. I can't find any foam for it either.

That's actually closed cell, the real dense stuff.

Open cell is the couch cushion.

It's open cell.  I'll see if he has any that size....though you may have to cut it down yourself....small price to pay for free foam.

An electric carving knife cuts it pretty good.

Make sure that whatever you get it is CLOSED CELL foam, open cell foam will absorb moisture and make your guns rust in the case.  I'd go polyethylene.

Doug,
Pelican foam is sold in lawrenceville Georgia Gun CaseI $55.00 for 3 peices that fit a 1700 case think and the # is  888-422-2737 or try Kennquip 800-560 9292

I have also used Carpet pad before there are some places that sell a real nice rubber type and it cuts easier that foam and does not absorb oil.

Locally you can get it from Georgia Case Company in Tucker, they build road cases of all types and do a damn good job too.  For a few bucks more and if you trace your gear they will cut it to fit.  Much better foam than pelican ever dreamed of.  I shit you not, #1 on my list for 15+yrs.

Dang nice to know they will cut it out and I have a cardboard pattern to.
I was dreading cutting it myself as my skills are not that good when it comes to that kind of stuff.
I'll give them a shout tomorrow !!
