Just south of Waycross on US1.

Look for the Okefenokee Swamp Park sign.

Turn off US1 onto the road that goes to the Okefenokee Swamp Park (Vereen Bell). After you cross the tracks, take the first dirt road to the left (there is no sign there anymore since the range was vandalized).

Follow the road back into the Dixon Memorial Forrest. All of the turnoffs are cabled off or gated, so you can't really get lost.

It's about three miles back down the dirt road.

25 and 100 yard ranges, with concrete benches and shelters over the firing lines.

I'll see if I can find a map.

Yes, it's free and hours are, pretty much during daylight.

Please take a trash bag.  Lately, the range has been collecting a lot of garbage. After the vandalism, I don't want to give the DNR any reasons to close the range.

Ditto to the trash bag.  I usually spend an extra half an hour or so before I leave trying to do some clean-up.

The road going back there is in pretty bad shape.  It's passable now that the water has receded but you have to wind your way around the deep holes.

Wasn't too bad on the roads today only two pretty badly washed out areas but easily passible with care in a 2wd of reasonable clearance.  A minivan made it out there while I was packing up to leave.  I wasn't sure about road conditions so I didn't invite any friends, because I didn't want to disappoint anyone.

If I'd known you were headed out there, I would have rode out to meet you. Maybe bust off a few rounds. Couldn't make any real plans, didn't know until the very last minute whether we would have Friday or Monday off for the 4th.

Were there a lot of people shooting yesterday?

Thought about going this morning but I've got too much to do to really spend any time out there today.

Like I said, I would've invited some folks, but I heard so many bad things about the roads I didn't want to drag anyone out there and just get stuck or have to turn around.

I would have enjoyed some company because I had the range to myself for an hour or so, then a couple of guys showed up to check zero on a newly installed scope.  two more guys showed up just after I finished cleaning up after myself and the other two.

There was a thouroughly trashed flat screen T.V. that someone left behind, all shot up.  I didn't have my pick-up to haul off a bunch of extra garbage yesterday.

I know a few commands at the subbase were a little slow to announce how liberty was going down for the holiday weekend.  Some commands are taking monday off instead, or offering it to friday's duty section.

It was hot with a lot of wasps hornets and the normal assortment of bugs.  Pretty sure one of my bites is a yellow fly bite.  Worse than the gnats and mosquito's that seem to have respected the DEET and left me alone.

It's that kind of crap that's going to eventually get the range shut down for good.

I thought that the vandalism would've taught the local shooters to appreciate what we have. Shooters drive in from the surrounding counties (and some longer distances) to get to our range and we reward them with a range covered in trash and hazardous waste!

I always take proper targets, cardboard for the target stands, a folding chair if possible, and pack out my trash. And I'll spend a few minutes to pick up some of the garbage others have left behind. Cans, bottles, food wrappers, ammo boxes strewn on the ground, inappropriate and unsafe targets, you name it and it's there.

I even went once and several of the chairs had been shot up. Hence taking my own chair now.

I brought my own chair on this trip too.  For the same reasons.
