Hey Gents,

I'm a long time lurker, (was on the boards the night the AWB sunsetted) finally found a reason to join and post.

I was just honorably discharged from the Marine Corps after serving four years and have been accepted into UGA for this fall.

I've visited the campus a couple times (Fall, Spring, AAC SIlencer Shoot) but still I don't have a optimal grasp on the area.
Any recommendations for living off campus? parking? bad neighborhoods? loose women? Scams? Fun Shops? (actually kblagg at ballisticsounds is a BAMF for helping me when I came out a couple months ago)

Thanks,
-Mark

Figure out how you plan to get to campus, and narrow your search from there. Some places are walking distance (downtown/north campus area), some are on UGA bus lines, some on city bus lines (free for students), some have no bus service at all. Other than that just look around, most places have lots of specials going on to get people to move in, and incentives like free water/basic cable. I live on Macon Hwy and love it, though it is somewhat of a drive. Anything else you wanna know just ask! Welcome and thanks for your service!

Fun Shops

Clyde Armory (best in town)
Sporting Arms (Winterville)
Franklin's
The Firing Lane

Areas to avoid  East Side by Cedar Shoals
Anything near the housing projects (Baxter Street near Clarke Central, and N. Hull St. where N. Lumpkin dead ends)
Anything Near MLK Drive, this area has seen lots of gentrification lately but don't let the nice housing fool you.

Closer you are to campus the more the rent is going to be

Do you want an apartment that consists mainly of college students? Or one that is a mix of professionals and college students?
Or do you want to rent a house?

Parking at UGA sucks, it's a lottery based system and chances are your assigned spot will be no where near where the bulk of your classes will be.

If you can, figure out where the bulk of your classes will be.  If possible, find a place to live that is on a bus route that gets you there easily.  Also, get a scooter if you can live within a couple miles of campus - it makes life *much* easier on campus.

East of Campus gets to be the 'hood pretty quickly, and is generally avoided.  The west side of town is better, but there's bad pockets all over.

Let me know when you come to town - I'd be happy to spend an afternoon showing you around.

I am in athens so if you need anything let me know.I personally like eastside of athens off exit 7 from the loop.It is quiet and not as hectic as around downtown.Traffic backs up a little near the school though. When you get here maybe those of us in athens can get together and shoot at the firing lane.

When I was at UGA, I  lived at River Mill Apartments.  They were not the nicest apartments then (and that wast 12+years ago) and I don't know how it compared  to other places in terms of rent; but it was convenient as far as getting to school went.  It was located next to a North_South route bus stop and I could walk to class on South Campus within 15 minutes or so.

Yeah I’m slowly narrowing down the must have’s and the live without’s.

Yeah I know there was a reason I asked this question, I lived on the corner of 34th and Chestnut in West Philadelphia for a couple weeks

THANK YOU FOR THIS, I'm still filtering through the rest of my final forms to come out. Lottery system: No thanks.

What about a dual sport motorcycle? I would not be caught dead on a scooter. I appreciate the offer.

Motorcycles have to park in 'motorcycle' parking, and the lots aren't that common.  Scooters get to park almost *anywhere* - scooter areas are near almost all buildings.  Pretty much front-door parking.

Suck up the scooter image - all the cool kids (and athletes) do it.  Find a ruckus or another 'cool' scooter if you have to, but they really do make life *much* easier.  Also, buy one sooner rather than later - the prices are cheap now, but will be rising as August (and the demand) gets closer.  Look on craigslist...

A dual-sport (or any other motorcycle) is better than nothing, but nowhere as easy.

There's a scooter store on Baxter near Chelsea's.  They sell new and used.
