We're (wife and I) thinking of moving to Georgia from Indiana, but I NEED to be near a highpower range that hopefully would offer 1k yd competition (NRA highpower). Just wonder what the state has to offer?

TIA for any replies.

I don't know of any 1000 yard ranges here but there is one in TN if you are willing to live in north GA and drive.

Range 14 at Ft. Gordon goes out around 2000 yds.   It's got known distance target slots out to 800 yds.  Beyond that,  you have to measure yourself.  Civilians can shoot out there on Wednesday,  Thursday,  and select Saturdays.

Georgia has a very active highpower rifle scene, but not much in the way of 1000 yard ranges.  The 1000 yard ranges at Ft. Benning and Ft. Gordon are sometimes available for matches, otherwise everybody I know goes up to Oak Ridge near Chattanooga for 1000 yard matches.  If you live near Atlanta, it's possible to have a highpower match almost every weekend within 2.5 hours drive, 11 months out of the year.

If you move to west Georgia, you won't be very far from Opelika, AL, which has a 1000yd range.  For the most part, they do "sniper" competitions and the like there (that's where the Practical Marksman Challenge is held), don't know about High Power.

In so far as I am aware the Benning Rifle and Pistol Club located at Shelton Range has its furthest targets (steel plates) at 600 yards, the range is also not cleared for .50 BMG I don't know about civilian access to other ranges like the aforementioned Ft. Gordon thing-

Ft. Gordon and Ft. Benning have 1000 yard ranges available for scheduled matches only, I believe.  I quit shooting about the time the Army Marksmanship Unit commander got the Ft. Benning 1000 yard range cleaned up and ready for competition use again.

$9.00 covers you for as long as you care to shoot.  It also includes targets and spotting scopes.   It's $4.00 for members,  but I figured somebody coming from a distance wouldn't be very interested in buying a membership.   They sell ammo out there too should you need it.  But I doubt a typical Arfcomer is gonna be dumb enough to go out there without enough of their own ammo.

That may not be what they mean, but that is what it says.

Yeah,  they certainly don't tell you what a "round" is, do they?   I was just posting from my experience out there.  A "round" could be from 9a.m. to 5 p.m.

I can see that, but someone tells me so much per round, I automatically think of ammo.

It seems that everywhere is 1000 yard matches.  There doesn't seem to be any place where you can just go, pay your money, and shoot at your leisure at 1000 yards.

Hard rock has a practice day the friday before the match 8 to 5 and I think $15 and the after the match on saturday they usually leave it open for more shooting and the match is only $20.
