We had a really close call.  My BIL has been staying with us. He was eating a bowl of cereal and looking out through our sliding glass door when he saw the tree coming toward the house.  I think he almost shat himself.   Since he's unemployed and been mooching off of us for months, he's going to be spending the rest of the day with a bow saw trimming all the branches off of it.  Luckily for us, the tree broke off about 20 feet up on the trunk. It landed about 5 feet from the base of the tree which caused the tree to miss the house by ~8-10 feet.  The last pic is kinda crappy, but you get the idea of how close it was.  The biggest casualty was the bird feeder.  I now have an excuse to buy a chain saw.    Hopefully i'll be careful and there won't be any of this...

Darn.

We had a large white oak that is about 4 feet in radius - rotten in the core - fall on Friday while we were away. Luckily, it fell away from the house or else it would have taken about half of the house with it. Neighbors said that it shook like an earthquake when it hit.

Looks like it damned near hit that cat.

Looks like the cat is taking advantage of "low hanging fruit" and looking for any critters that came down with the tree!

Glad the house is ok - I was watching the trees bend and swirl like crazy during the wind gusts this a.m.

Nah, she's one of the welfare feral cats that we feed.  I think she came up to see if the house had been damaged so she could do some looting.  She just dropped a load of kittens two days ago, so we've been trying to feed her when she shows up.  I need to find some place where I can get 2-3 live traps at one time.  We've got >10 that need to be fixed.

Suppressors and subsonic 22's are your friend.

And if nothing else some Aguila Super Colibri's are your friend as well and are most excellent out of a bolt gun.  (about 25 yards max effective range on these though)

Check your homeowners ins. my brother had a tree "die" he was trying to see if the ins. company would pay to have it removed before it fell on the house they said no but a few days later they told him his policy had "tree replacement" so he got $1000 to replace it - the $500 deductable.

Owie.

Ehh, I was never a cat guy until we had a pregnant feral cat show up on our porch a week ago.  I felt sorry for her and put her up in our bathroom until we found a foster home.  Well, she gave birth a couple of days ago.  We've got 4 wee ones now getting their basic chemical warfare training. They're so cute. The mom's cool as shit, too.  She's definitely thankful for the shelter- she presents the kittens for inspection every time I go in the room, and her motor runs so loud you can hear her with the door shut.

I'm glad the tree fell where it did.  We were hoping a tree fell on our house, though- the wife wants a house with a basement, and I want a garage.  Nothing like a natural disaster to make way for improvements!

had a similar experience a few weeks ago with a 20" sweet gum.  just got done cleaning it up last week.  not quite as close as yours but definitely could have been bad.

be careful with the bow saw.  there is a reason they don't market those anymore.  as for me, i love my stihl ms270.

I spoke w/ my insurance agent yesterday.  No dice on tree removal or replacement.  Great thought though.

I doubt that cat is feral since she came inside and let you anywhere near her or her kittens.
Probaly someone dumped her nearby when she started "showing".
Mama cats will sometimes take off to have their cats elsewhere, but they try to stay away from every thing and everyone.

Hope you don't get attached to the cute little ones......, that is how I've wound up with eight or nine of them around the shop.
I've got all the girls spayed, and one tom fixed, but I have to catch the rest and get them done also.

Try Catsnip to see if you can match their schedule:
http://www.atlantaanimalalliance.com/aaa/schedule.htm

I couldn't meet up with them and had to use th elocal vet asap on three of the girls. If I could have dealt with Catsnip, I could have saved about 200.00 I think.
