Is there a magazine capacity restriction? I thought I read somewhere that there wasn't anymore but one of my buddies thought otherwise.

Anyone wanna shine some light.

What he said. Other than deer hunting with a shotty. You can pull the plug and go with 5 rounds.

Legally speaking yes, it would be unwise, but if there is nothing in the code section then there is nothing they could write you up on.

Well I'm sure with a drum I'd just max all the bag limits for that day and go on about my perfectly legal business.

There are no capacity restrictions with rifles. My dog can verify as he hunts deer all the time with an AK and 30 rounds in the mag. You can hunt other game too. If in doubt, read the regulations that 'ikickhippies' posted above.

What caliber is your AK?

I use both 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 AKs when hunting. The one in the picture is 5.45. Which is .221 diameter so it is legal.

I didn't know you could get deer with a 5.45

I've never been into big hunting.....I suppose I should start.

Any centerfire cartridge 22 caliber and larger is legal for the taking of game species.

I didn't mean legal....but more like lethal.

I don't know anything about deer hunting but I just assumed you started at like .270 and went up from there.

Well, I can certainly testify it is lethal enough. I have taken down many deer with 5.45. However, I do not recommend it for the beginner hunter. Shot placement is going to be much more important with a smaller round. Shot placement is always important regardless of the rifle used, but you are going to have less room for error with a smaller round.

I think we can agree that hunting with 5.45 AK is fairly rare. You would probably find a lot of critics to say the round is too small and under powered. But, I am comfortable with using the 5.45 and I know what kind of shots I am capable of making. In addition, it is just fun to walk in the woods and hunt with an AK!

This is the biggest deer I have ever taken. He was around 200lb's.

Unless the laws have been changed ( it's been a while since I hunted),
some center fire cartridges are not permitted for big game such as deer.
Some of those not permitted are:
22 Hornet, 25-20 and 32-20 Winchester.

This may be inaccurate, so check the regs.

On the link that ikickhippies posted, click on '08-09 Hunting regulations'.  Check out the legal firearms regs on page 7.

The 5 round mag capacity hasn't been around in quite some time....  for rifles.  It doesn't specifically say you can have unlimited rounds, but it is omitted from the section.

There are various changes to the hunting regs yearly.  Usually on the 1st few pages of the regs there is a section outlining major changes for the year.

NIce deer frank!  Especially to have taken it w/ the AK, I'm sure it just makes it that much sweeter!

Very cool.

I think you've sold me on learning to deer hunt one day.
