If a person agreed to purchase something from someone, and the seller wanted paypal, but the buyer could not use paypal for whatever reason, but would honor the agreement to purchase using some other form of payment, and the seller decided to sell to someone else who could use paypal, would the seller be in the wrong for selling to someone else?

It matters, if it was on ebay, the bottom of the item's page says what payment type is acceptable. If they say only paypal is acceptable, then it is your problem saying that you needed to know what payment was accepted before you bought it. Paypal sucks, and so does ebay, but you have to go buy the seller's rules and guidelines

Again, if we're talking ebay, here is their policy regarding payments:

Other payment methods

Checks, money orders, and bank wire transfers aren’t allowed for most eBay purchases.

But sellers can offer these payment methods for certain items in some categories, including Motors, Capital and Business Equipment, Real Estate, and Adult Only.

So pretty much they don't allow seller for 98% of items to state that they will take non-paypal payments. When you think about it from a business perspective it's sheer genius because ebay gets to lay a few additional points on the seller to accept payment.

Bottom line not much you could do. My advice would be to get a paypal account. I know it sucks, but if you wanna buy on ebay it's pretty much a requirement.

Thanks for the replies............this wasnt on E-bay, but on another gun forum. Paypal came up after I told the person I would take it, but he decided to keep what he was selling, so it's pretty much moot at this point...........

as long as its paypal or postal MO I don't see why someone would have a problem

Well in that case I'd report it to a mod- that shit is frowned on in the EE Here and probably elsewhere.

I personally think it's a little unprofessional to not specify those sorts of details up front.

But that's just me.

I expect thorough information from people if they wish to sell something.  And I expect readiness on both sides of the deal

offer and acceptance. If you match his offer with acceptance of every term he specified you had a contract. His responsibility to state things like that up front.

A couple of years ago, somebody locally bought a ak parts kit from someone out of state.  They also paid with paypal.  After the seller shipped the item, the buyer notified paypal that the transaction was for gun parts.  Well paypal canceled the transaction and took the money back from the seller so now the seller was out a kit, and money and the buyer refused to talk to the seller.  Well I believe some people here help get it straightened out, but basically, if your gonna insist on using paypal for gun related items, you could loose your ass.

I have heard of that happening.........I dont use paypal for the same reason, as a friend came close to losing his tail that way. But, in the end I lost no money, just the chance at some parts for a gun I have.
