Built to be an affordable, introductory level rifle, the new Panther “Sportical” from DPMS bridges the gap between the sporting and tactical markets.  Chambered in 5.56 NATO, this lightweight rifle features a 16” lite-contour barrel, a slick-side Lo-Pro upper receiver and carbine length GlacierGuards. The aluminum upper and lower receivers feature a uniform, Mil Spec hard-coat anodizing.  A semi-auto trigger group, aluminum trigger guard, A2 Pistol Grip and the Pardus 6-position, telescoping carbine stock complete the introductory rifle.  Two 30-rd magazines, a cleaning kit and hard case for storage come standard with each rifle.  The rifle weighs just 6.3 lbs when empty.

Doesn't have the "evil shell deflector", foward assist, or "deadly assault dust cover".

Railed for scope to humanely put down game animals.

Light weight for field use.

What made a 1903 Springfield sporting in the days of the Trapdoors, Sharps, and Winchester?

the marketing group made is sporting.

they are trying to expand their target audience.

very smart decision IMHO to take the EBR image away in the climate we are in.
"Its not EVIL its for the Hunters"

and this!!!!
Light weight for field use.

My Turkey Gun is the heaviest thing i have ever held....... after toting it for about 4 hrs of walking in, stalking birds and walking out ....I forgot my sling ... I wished it only weighted 6lbs that day

I see this as the same. They are preparing for the inevitable. Start making them "hunting rifles" instead of "assault rifles".

yea that is another good way of looking at this.

I just see if they get it in more people's hands as being a good thing.  maybe we have to get rid of the evil black rifles and all get camo sporting rifles.  I don't mind taking krylon to mine :).  look at the assault weapon ban.  what made them assault rifles were cosmetics.

I don't know. I could probably live without the dust cover but I don't know about the deflector. Never seen which way the brass flies without one though. As far as the forward assist, good ammo, keep the rifle clean and good mags...shouldn't be a proble but it's nice when you do actually need it.

Maybe they thought "sporting" might be better than "economy."

The should have called it the POS model, as it looks and feels economy.  I mean, it doesn't save you that much money.  You can piece together a decent AR for $800, and not need to by a "Sporterized" cheap version.

AR15.com = felted.

HR15.com here we come.

hey if renaming gets it past the assault weapons ban, rename it banana puddin' for all I care. I highly doubt that is the reason behind their tactics, although if it worked it would be brilliant.
