So I have to take a ride in a patrol car for an 8 hour shift for my Criminal Justice Class. Any Atlanta/Cobb/Fulton/Marietta/etc area officers that are willing to let me take a ride for a shift? I was told I need to go through the department before I can go, but I would like to ride with someone who isn't going to be boring as hell, or a bad LEO (which I dont think we have on AR15).

If any of you guys wouldnt mind this, write here, send me a pm, email me. Any of those will work. And if any of you have experience doing this, let me know the proper channels to go through.

Thanks in advance.

Any LEO bashers need not write in this thread.

what guarantees do we have that you are not "boring as hell"?

i'm not in patrol anymore so i can't take you out, but let me know if you want to see City of Atlanta.

I want to ride!! I am not going into leo, but I wouldn't mind seeing the OTHER side of Atlanta.

goto http://www.atlantapd.org and check the zone map at the bottom if you are familiar with the area of the City you would like to see.

look up the precinct address and stop by to fill out a Ride Along Request.  it will go up the chain to the Commander and you will be contacted for a date.

i'll recommend zones 1,3, and 4....and 3pm-11pm shift or 11pm-7am shift (slower in winter months unless on wknd nights).

what do you wanna see?

ETA: you can also stop by City Hall East - Field Operations Division Admin Office and fill out a Ride Along Request.  you may not get as much choice with that though.

"a ride"?

hmm, walk up to your nearest officer in a patrol car, jump on the hood, crack open a PBR, commence to drankin'....

the officer or the wagon driver on duty will give you a ride without any paperwork or processing from the brass.

I hope you guys enjoy.

It's much safer to watch the train wreck you hope to see from your recliner while watching Cops.

I have that set to record on my DVR and I do enjoy watching it.

saj195-  I would like to do a ride along in zone 6 (beat 609) if possible since that is where I live.  I don't have time right now to do the CPA but I may in the future.  Let me know if you can make this happen.  Thanks.

cruise by the precinct on Hosea and they can hook you up.

best not to get tanked at Vinocity before you stumble over there though.

just note on your request that you want to ride in 609's regular and it'll go up the chain.

I can hook you up with a ride along with my cousin.  He works for Clayton County Police, he's sure to be very busy and you won't be bored.

I would help set up a ride along here, but all we really usually do is traffic.  My cousin has no time to do traffic, he's way too busy answering calls.  He normally is patrolling the Tara blvd/1941 area..

you'll be required to wear a ballistic vest.

beyond that, the officer you ride with and the command staff there make the decisions.

i used to brief my unarmed ride-along passengers where my secondary weapons were located on my person.

I will soon be unemployed in about 2 months, so I would be up for a high speed chase or a shoot out or two.

Kinda hard to ensure that you will see any action. Zone assignment, officer assignment etc can help the excitement factor, but this job is often 7 hrs and 55 minutes of boredom followed by two minutes of chaos. Chances are the command is going to put you with an officer who is mostly by the book, as compared to the streetwise ass kicking style officer.

Also from a liability stand point most agency wont let a civilian rider become engaged in high risk behaviors....chases etc. Our policy is no lights and sirens with a civilian observer, and if its a SHTF call, ie shooting you are responding to, chase in progress etc...I drop you off on a street corner and have another officer come pick you up when its safe.

That part of the night doesn't sound so good.  ... I think my chances of surviving the night would better in the high speed chase or shootout than being left on the sidewalk in West Atlanta, especially after getting out of the Police car.

Atlanta no...that wouldnt be a good thing in certain neighborhoods, but in my jurisdiction there arent any really hardcore places that you need to be overly concerned with as a citizen.

I can see it in the headlines:  Civilian ride along passenger dropped off on the corner during a pursuit is mugged and shot.  Yeah,  I wouldn't want this to happen in Atlanta.  Especially if I would have to be disarmed while riding.

Thanks saj195.  I will check with zone 6 precinct about a ride along.  Are the ride along requests generally granted?

all of that is my experience as well.

bear in mind that it takes a lot of hours/days/weeks riding with patrol officers/deputies to get 1 single minute of action on the TV show COPS.

you are best off getting the insider's tour and learning from the officer you are with than thinking you will be entertained more than a night on the couch.

i have seen people quit swiftly when they actually have to do the real part of the job (paperwork, paperwork, practice diplomacy on the street to solve problems, and more paperwork).

it will always clear any illusion you may have about what the job is about.

Same with our policy. No riders during high risk activities.

I am really interested in a ride along, as well.  I have always wanted to be a LEO after my active stint was up, and now that it is, it's time to start making decisions.

I'm different than most folks, though- I actually want to see the paperwork side of things, just to see what I'm getting into.  I'm a doorkicking 11B, so the "softer" side of things will be the hardest adjustment for me.

So when you're doing traffic stops, do the riders sit in the car or tag along behind you?

I've never ridden with police,  but have gone out with my brother (fire dept) a couple of times.  He just threw a reflective vest at me and told me to make myself invisible on any calls (which were all medical).

Now that I think about it, asking someone to be invisible while wearing a reflective vest is inherently contradictory.

Riders stay in the car on all traffic stops. I have let riders get out on certain calls, like theft reports etc. Sometimes dependent upon the scene location etc, I will let my ride along get out on an accident and observe.  What I have run into before is the complainant/victim dont like sharing details in front of a person who they think, or know isnt a cop. Life as a ride along is often very boring.
