I would like to extend an invitation to join the Georgia State Defense Force. We are a volunteer force that forms the third arm of the Georgia Department of Defense, along with the Georgia National Guard and the Air National Guard.
Our Mission and Purpose When ordered by the Adjutant General, provide an organized, trained, disciplined, rapid response volunteer force to assist state and local government agencies, and civil relief organizations in impending or actual emergencies to assure the welfare and safety of the citizens of Georgia. We are currently reorganizing and shifting our focus to become a premier Search and Rescue force. Our motto is "Parati Servire" - Ready to Serve. If you have a calling to serve your state and your community check us out. http://www.gasdf.com 2LT Georgia Bryant 2/5 BDE, GSDF |

Welcome to the HTF, and thanks for the invitation!
I've considered joining. It's a shame they have a no-weapons policy (though most of the state-run militias do; Alaska is a notable exception), but that's not really the mission they're engaged in either, I suppose. |

I'll stay in the GA National Guard. At least we get to use and possess weapons. Shouldn't a "well regulated militia" be able to bear arms under the 2nd amendment? I guess the GSDF isn't "well regulated". Yea but you work for the imperialist federal government not the honorable states! |
| I hate to paint an entire organization with such a broad brush but my experience with the GSDF hasn't been particularly positive and I don't think I'd join if they paid me. The most glaring issue would be the SOG poser who is a "major" here, but the local organization seems pretty dicked up in general. |

Are yall NASAR certified? Carver, We just had a new CG take over the first of November. One of his goals is to get folks that are physically able NASAR certified. We do have some folks that won't be able to pass the physical part, but there are other ways they can serve. We each do what we can. To paraphrase Nuke LaLoosh, we're all just here to help the team. |

This is what I found:
OUR MISSION:
When ordered by the Adjutant General, the Georgia State Defense Force provides an organized, trained, disciplined, rapid response uniformed force. Volunteers respond to needs and emergency situations as defined by the Adjutant General or the Governor, and assist local authorities where such missions do not conflict. The Georgia State Defense Force performs a variety of missions for the National Guard including family support, legal assistance, medical support, and technical assistance in a variety of areas including communications, Emergency Support Teams and in other specialized areas. The Georgia State Defense Force performs missions such as evacuation and control during natural disasters, perimeter safety and medical assistance to major public festivals, and maintains liaison with a variety of local emergency, law enforcement, and homeland security agencies. The Georgia State Defense Force performs diverse missions from assisting in military data recording to manning emergency operations centers. Our county wants nothing to do with them. The Red Cross in our area wants nothing to do with them, but I think it has more to do with their choice of Liaison Officer to the Red Cross.....as he is an idiot. |

I think they are trying to re-do their image and for that I applaud them.
Right now they are regarded in many circles as the stereotypical redneck/armageddon has come/the sky is falling/fudds that show up when something bad comes down....... Kind of like the backwoods rednecks that only come out in the snow in their 4x4's to pull folks out of ditches in North GA |

Yeah, I could get over the no firearms thing if I could at least have a spear. ![]() Is it that you can't carry in uniform that has everyone "up in arms"? I actually understand their "no weapons" policy and why they need to have one in place. The whole Michigan militia thing? |
|
Huh?
An organization like this (to my understanding) intends to give support to other emergency personnel. Those other personnel are the ones that might be armed. Police departments or the NG for example at least have some type of training and qualifications programs. Their members cannot carry firearms unless they complete the training and pass the qualifications tests. The GSDF simply has a different role. Still I would be hesitant to participate in such an organization if they deployed me for "crowd control", which is one of the tasks they mention, without at least being able to carry pepper spray. |

I agree I looked into joining in the past and the no weapons thing is what stopped me. I'll be more than happy to take classes, tests, qualifications whatever to carry one. I am not however going to head into a disaster to lend aid completely unarmed. That just screams victim.... |

Defense force? I don't get, after spending five years active duty Army then joining the Reserves then the Guard, I was disappointed in the weekend warrior thing. Nobody cared because it was only part time and they were only there for the college money. This organization seems like a place that people join to get the uniforms and use them in airsoft games

It does expel a projectile. |
