ombies invading downtown at a bar near you HALEY TEMPLE
This photo of University alum T.J. Reynolds and his cousin has inspired a group of students to dress up as zombies and go on a pub crawl Saturday night. Calling all flesh-eaters, blood-drinkers, or just self-claimed weirdos of a similar sort!
Join local zombies downtown Saturday night for a post-mortem invasion of Athens' bars in the first Zombie Pub Crawl.
It is an event that has been on the drawing board since April, said the event's manager Charles Richards, a senior horticulture major from Lawrenceville.
The event is free to all who are willing to participate, and the zombies are encouraged to meet up in the parking lot behind Tasty World at around 10 p.m. From there, the living dead will crawl from bar to bar.
"I'm hoping we will stay in a horde as this will have a better effect on crowds." Richards said.
"Zombies are better handled by normal people in a singular sense. But in a horde, zombies are at their most dangerous."
Stephen Joiner, a junior computer engineering major also from Lawrenceville, said he will be participating in the pub crawl because "every weekend you see the same fraternity and sorority groups doing bar-hops that exclude anyone who isn't a member."
"Zombies don't make you pay them to be your friends! The biting is another story, but this is an event for anyone and everyone who wants the absolute most unique downtown experience."
He also mentioned one of the perks of being a zombie: "you never have to wait in line since people run when they see you coming."
It sounds nice to be the only one at the watering hole, but what are the reasons behind such an unlikely event so far from Halloween?
"I think everyone has their own reasons, but the main reason is to do something fun and unique. It's not really about attracting attention so much as showing people that being weird is totally OK," Joiner said.
Richards feels the same: "We're trying to get into that kind of crowd that's kind of out there-that likes to dress up, gather together and have a good time," he said.
Richards has been collaborating with others for the event since he got an e-mail from the event's original creator, T.J. Reynolds, a few weeks ago.
He said it all started when a few friends were laughing at a photo of Reynolds and his zombie-playing cousin as she attempted to take a bite out of Reynolds' head.
One friend mentioned they should "dress up as zombies and hit downtown. And it sort of just ran from there," Richards said.
Those interested can look for updates on the Athens Zombie Crawl's Facebook group, especially as to what time to meet.
Richards said that there is a possibility that a make-up artist from Project Zombie Attack of Atlanta may be on scene to help with make-up and costumes before heading out for the pub crawl.
"In order to get make-up done, be there around eight because [the make-up artist] said an hour might be too short to get made up as a zombie," Richards said.
At its core, the Athens' Zombie Pub Crawl is less concerned with astonishing downtown goers and is more about creating an event to represent the outsider and essentially, the zombie in all of us.
"If there are any zombies I haven't met, I'd like to fix that - they're my kind of people," Richards said. |
Hope one of our Athens brothers can take some post mortem pics for us.
