Hey guys, I need some help. My Father in Law had a stroke a year and a half ago. He was an avid hunter before this and while he has come a long way in his recovery, he still doesn't have full use of his left arm, which obviously means he can't shoot a rifle. So I was thinking as a Birthday gift getting him a decent Pistol/Scope he can hunt with. Any suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I've always regretted selling the Super Red Hawk in .44

it would drop a pig with no problem

Ruger Super Blackhawk or Redhawk in 44 mag. Inexpensive scope. Barrel length, whatever you want. The gun is built like a tank.

oh yea you HAVE to buy the 11.5" barrell for it.  impratical but cool none the less.

You might also consider a T/C Contender.  Yes, it's single-shot, but you can get anything from a .22 LR to 30-30 to a bit more.  The .22 would mean he could practice cheaply, too.  You can pick up good used ones pretty cheap these days, too....

Encore advice is solid.
I recently picked this one up from my FIL to keep it in the family.
Ruger Blackhaw .41mag.

I actually have a Super Blackhawk in 44mag.

I am not a wheelgun kinda guy, as I only have two.

But let me tell you... that homely revolver is accurate with iron sights at 100 yards.  I can routinely keep 4 out of 6 in a paint can at that distance.

I love that thing, and would have no qualms hunting with that as my only weapon in GA.

I would go with a Ruger in 44 mag. The Encore is a good idea put if he doesn't have much use of his left arm he might have trouble if he needs to reload for a quick follow up shot.

If your not a revolver fan something  in 10mm auto is as powerful as a 41 mag, hits hard and has a flat trajectory

Lots of experience and good ideas on this thread.

As much as I like the TC, if FIL cannot use his left hand I would lean toward a revolver.

The larger question is how the stand will be set up to support his needs.  Padded rails are nice to shoot from.

Getting into and out of a stand with only one usable hand need some thought as well.

There may be another way to go.  Look at the Model R-25 Remington.  One of these in a 7-08 would be nice.  Shooting from a well designed stand one hand is all he would need.

I like the versatility of the S&W 460XVR revolver(5 shot). The 460 cartridge is capable to take down a deer at 200 yards. It will also chamber and shoot the 45LC and 454 Casull which are also well suited to take large game. Although the 460 recoils less in my opinion than the 454. It is available in barrels lenghts out to 12". Personally I like a pistol about 8.5 for hunting. I think most come equipped for scope mounting provisions.

All the X-frames have a removable rear sight that is tapped for a scope mount underneath.

I've almost always hundgun hunted exclusively and hunted the thick stuff that nobody else wanted to hunt.

My favorite has always been a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag. They're strong enough to handle my 300 gr handloads that were clocking right at 1300 fps. (slight primer flattening) Top it off with a Leupold 2X scope and it's complete.

My fave for more open woods is a TC contender in .35 Remington shooting Remington's 150 gr PSP. I killed a doe at around 225 yards with that setup with a 4X Leupold. Can he use his left hand enough to carry a long hiking stick to use for a rest?

I love mine!  I carries easily all day in the woods, is light enough to shoot comfortably with one hand, and is very accurate.

It's all beat up and has been miles and miles thru the woods, but it shoots really nicely.
