Ok, so, I wanted to get a .308 to hunt with this year, but the wife went back to school and that pretty much killed my funds.  So, what is every one's opinion about hunting (deer) a .223.  After seeing Strycnine's pics I was thinking that maybe a .223 would do the job if I had the right ammo.  The other thing, where I would be hunting, I really would not take a shot that was more than 100 yards.  Any thoughts here or ammo suggestions?

Shot placement.  Be mindful of the ammo and bullet design (whatever you use) limitations.

I've always hunted with larger calibers, but think .223 in the right conditions is fine.

Do you reload?

223 is fine for most game in GA.

As Book said, shot placement is key.

I think one of the best .223 hunting rounds is the 64 grain Winchester Power Point that comes in the silver box. It is a soft point and it is devastating to hogs and deer. But of course.....shot placement is key with any round.

I use it in my 10.5" AR for hogs and I have never had to shoot one more than once.

I agree with everybody else. Shoot placement is the key. Which from my photos you can tell.............. I'm lacking in that department. I also try to keep shots well under 100 yards.

I loaded up 200 rounds of 50gr Vmax to use on hogs. Anybody have any experience with that round hunting hog?

I've got experience using the 55 and 60 grain VMAX in hogs. The VMAX works on hogs but no where near what the 64 grain soft point does. The soft point is just pure devastating compared to others.I actually bough 500 of the 64 grain softpoints from Winchester and load them over 23.4 grains of Hodgden Benchmark. That yields excellent accuracy and enough velocity for expansion inside 100 yards from my 10.5" gun. they should work extremely well in a 16" gun. Velocity is 2460 from my 10.5" I have not chronoed them in the 16" yet. My guess is about 200fps more.
Plastic tipped bullets are OK but fragment way too much for me. They are good for limited penetration in my opinion. I like my bullets to expand and retain the majority of their weight. Ballistic tip style bullets just don't do that.

Shot placement is key, but it is key with a large magnum rifle too!  I hand load the barnes-x-triple shock, and it performs nicely and penetrates deep.  I took this buck this past season with a double tap of 53 grain love to the heart.

Thanks for the info on the Winchester 64gr soft points. I'll order some try out and just use the Vmax for beavers and such.

I was gonna ask if any of yall used the barnes-x-triple shock. They make them in 55, 62-ish and 70-something gn flavors.

I am gonna run with the 70's in a 223AI I am building now.

I have used the 53gr triple shock, they penetrated deep.  I was worried a ballistic tip would open too fast with little penetration.  They are a lot longer bullet than the same wt in a lead/jacket combo.

I've seen the offerings for the Barnes triple shock in .224

I shoot the 140 in my 280AI and have been thoroughly pleased with it.

I think I'll get some in the 60 grainer and give them a shot. Thats one thing I like about having hogs to blast within 15 minutes of my house. They are a great ballistic testbed.

If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it does it still make a noise?

Short answer.....no.
