The family and I will be visiting my oldest boy who is stationed at Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC. We will have a few days after Easter to travel. We are thinking about visiting Savannah, however, we are hearing less than enthusiastic rumblings from the South Carolina folks. They say that it will be during Spring Break and the traffic in downtown Savannah and around town will be horrible and the Spring Breakers will make it a poor time to visit. And imply it isn't that great a place to visit anyway. I'ld like to hit the historic area of downtown and then go out to Ft. Pulaski. Is this just not a good time. I'd like the other boys to see the Fort. We will be back a few weeks after that in mid-April since my son will be having surgery and could come down then if things will be less hectic after Spring Break. Also, after having read a few of the other threads, can you confirm I can have a loaded pistol in the glove compartment of the car, if there is no disqualifying reason? |
| I think we have different views as im a college student and a few of my friends and i are planning on heading down there for spring break. i heard it was ridiculously insane down there and its pretty hard to beat savannah on st pattys day... we were down there for new years of 07 and it was sick!!! a bum tried to fight me on river street, lol. |
|
you should be fine, all the spring breaks around this area are staggered anyway (i know ppl that are off this wk already). def go check out river street, take a few downtown tours (walking or by bus) if you're interested. the fort is pretty cool and you might as well head out to the pier at tybee if you're going to be that far along. |

Savannah is a pretty unique city in that there are few highways to get clogged with traffic, and you can walk all over downtown to see the touristy things. As has been posted, take a trolley tour, walk the river. Pulaski is a pretty neat afternoon as well. Paula Dean's restaurant is overrated in my opinion, but you will probably want to hit thatwhile you are there. Plan on a 1 hour wait in line. He place is downtown, so you can park and walk from there to other stuff. the party crowd doesn't come out till later. Bass Pro Shops is on the southside, in the mall. Probably a 20 minute drive from the river. If the traffic is really bad, it might take 25-30 minutes Where are you coming from? |
SC and SC, as in Southern California (me, Ma Danby and the Danby boys) and South Carolina (Oldest boy in Sumter). No interest in Bass Pro Shops. I drove past ours about an hour and a half ago. Lots of big pictures of Otis Chandler and other Chandlers shooting and hunting including on their land. Unfortunately their newspaper, the LA Times, became virulently anti-gun on their watch. But since we have one here it's not on my list. Waterfront is of some interest, but the downtown area and Fort are things we don't have here. The GA folks seem to all feel that Savannah is not going to be a hassle, the South Carolina contingent is a little discouraging. Since I'm bigger and meaner than any one of them I think we are going to come down. We just don't have much in the way of Civil War stuff around here. One building left at Drum Barracks over in Wilmington (LA Harbor area). Well I have a few weeks still. |

Ft. Pulaski is real nice. Ft. McAllister in Richmond Hill (25 min from downtown) is also interesting if you like to see the civil war stuff. This fort has underground bunkers and a museum, no big brick "fort". The yankees took it in 15 minutes after storming it. There is an old trainyard/round house/museum and the Ship's of the Sea museum (full of models of old ships and very interesting). May 3rd, we have the Scottish Highland Games (not downtown, but close). Go to City Market, it is a few blocks from River St. Don't come the 14-17 of March. That is when the kids are drinking downtown for St. Pat's day. I don't go near downtown then. The big gunshow is the end of March at the Civic Center. Lots to do in a fairly small downtown area. The Crab Shack on Tybee Island has about 25 alligators (all little ones). Good luck and have fun. Rob |

Watch it ranger! You just may start the war all over again! Savannah is a nice place to visit. I never dreamed of living in Savannah, Georgia for that matter but it is a good place. Also go out to Tybee. It's not like CA. but it has a small town quirkiness to it! |
|
Oh yeah... 'gators! You will be coming down past the Sav'h wildlife refuge. If you want to see them. it is free, a 6 mile drive down an improved road. worth the hour it will take you, and you don't have to do anything but look. My folks loved that drive. Also, the Georgia State Bird will be out. (the sand gnat) a little biting bastard that flies by the thousands when it is cool and calm. They look like fleas, but bite painfully. Surrise everyone and have a little bottle of deet in your pocket. You will be everyone's hero. Dan, did you find a Chrono? I found one for sale for about $75, but I only need it to check those subsonics in the PS90, and I hate to do that. Group buy, anyone... we could leave it at Dave's house. |
don't forget how those little suckers come out at dusk as well! |
|
You want to talk about small town quirkiness, over on GD, the small city in CA, that stirred up the fuss about no swearing. I was born and raised there. My Dad was in the HS Class of '41, my mother in Class of '46, '71 for me and '73 for Ma Danby. They proposed completing the Long Beach Freeway through there when I was in 2nd grade. I am now 54. That quirky town has kept them from progressing past the initial drawings phase. |

<--------- shhhh (savannah cop) If you like historic towns, come on to Savannah. River Street is definitely a 1 time must do, as is Ft. Pulaski (I enjoyed it). I have been here a year and a half, and I still enjoy goin for walks downtown and along the river. Also, GA Law 16-11-128 reads: A person commits the offense of carrying a pistol without a license when he has or carries on or about his person, outside of his home, motor vehicle, or place of business, any pistol or revolver without having on his person a valid license issued by the judge of the probate court of the county in which he resides, provided that no permit shall be required for persons with a valid hunting or fishing license on their person or for persons not required by law to have hunting licenses who are engaged in legal hunting, fishing, or sport shooting when the persons have the permission of the owner of the land on which the activities are being conducted; provided further, that the pistol or revolver, whenever loaded, shall be carried only in an open and fully exposed manner. Don't take it outside of your vehicle. GA doesn't recognize CA CCW licenses (if there are any). Savannah really isn't a bad place to visit. If you're bored one night, give 'er a visit. |

Savannah is a great city to visit. There is really no other city in the USA like it. I second the idea of a trolley tour. It is a cheap way to get a quick overview of the city and to pick a few places out to go and tour later. Also, the ghost tours at night are very fun. Savannah is the most haunted city in the country. Tybee Island is very low key compared to most beaches. There are some outstanding seafood restaurants on the way to Tybee. |

I have searched in vain for my itinerary from our trip last year, but cannot find it. Basically, the wife and I had a blast doing the following: Tybee Island swimming Tybee Island lighthouse & garrison ghost tour trolley tour of the town and it's squares and the history behind each Riverwalk the Pirate Restaurant of which I can't recall the name right off hand |
|
Wife's step dad used to help out at the forts. He does re-enactments as the great Gen Rob. E. Lee. They used to live in Tybee by the lighthouse, now on Wilmington Is. We'll be there this weekend..........I deal with Gulfstream on the other side of town. Stay away from Uncle Bubba's.....the food and service sucked when we went. Oh and GA has reciprocity with FL |

What kind of food do you like to eat? If seafood is to your liking, I recommend Pelican Grill on LaRoache Avenue. It is kind of pricey, but hell, you're on vacation. I'm a cheap SOB, but that is where I go for a night out with the wife. Also, (help me out here guys) the Sea Shell house at I-95 and 204 is great for a group of folks. Pretty reasonable IMO, but not in the 'fine dining' category. |
i believe it's just called the shell house if memory serves me correct, and yes, food there is excellent and not that pricey. also, there's a place right off of highway 80 around wilmington island that's next to the water, great food but i can't remember the name of it since i'd only been there once =/ |
Williams Seafood is the one that burned down. That was at least 4-5 years ago. I almost forgot about that place! |
|
Gotta go to the Crab Shack by Lazaretto Creek (just before Tybee Island). Great food, right on the water, under the live oak trees. Nothing like you have ever experienced before. Alligators in pens that you can feed, etc Another great place to eat on Tybee that is overlooked by all but the locals is called "The Sundae Cafe" It's in a little strip mall that has a gas station and a liquor store. Just before the big turn to the right as youre going down the "strip" on Tybee. Absolutely awesome food for a great price......and usually only locals there. Best kept secret on Tybee. |
Yep, that's the place. Just across from the Wilmington Island Yacht Club. |
