It's happening as we speak. 1 Officer was shot in the back and chest with pellets from a shotgun. The other Officer was shot in the leg and a citizen was shot in the back also. I know both Officers well and I'm still waiting to hear on their condition. A robot is going through the house now looking for him..... |

Fox Atlanta is reporting both officers in stable condition, with one being evaluated while the other is in surgery. No mention anywhere I've found of a wounded civilian, although I'm finding conflicting stories of whether they were on a domestic call or serving a search warrant. Here's to hoping both officers recover 100%. Note: I'm not claiming your information is inaccurate, I'd be surprised if it were, I've found substances with higher intelligence and more culture than the average reporter in abandoned dishes in my daughter's room. |

AJC: Link to story Long Gwinnett standoff continues in cop shooting By CHRISTIAN BOONE The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 01/04/08 Gwinnett County police this morning remained locked in an armed standoff with a man who 10 hours earlier allegedly shot two officers as they attempted to serve a warrant at a house in Suwanee. After the officers knocked on the door of the home about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, they were hit by gunfire, said police spokesman David Schiralli. It was not immediately known how many times they were shot. The officers were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, where they were in stable condition late Thursday, officials said. One of the officers underwent surgery and was in the hospital's intensive care unit, Schiralli said at 4:15 a.m. Friday. The names of the officers have not been released. A SWAT team was dispatched to the house and at 9 p.m. began negotiating with a man who was holed up inside the residence, Schiralli said. No one else was in the home, off Suwanee Dam Road on the east side of the city. Gunfire was reported at the home shortly before 6 a.m. Friday, but police have not commented on who fired the shots. Staff writer Mike Morris contributed to this article. --------------------------------------------------------------------- From WSBTV: Link to story SUWANEE, Ga. -- Authorities remain at the scene where they say two Gwinnett County police officers were shot and wounded Thursday night as they were serving an arrest warrant. The suspect then barricaded in the home and police swarmed to the scene. The Gwinnett County SWAT team has the home surrounded, and has been trying to talk the suspect out of the home. Shots were heard from inside the home about 6:00 a.m., but police believe the suspect is still alive. The officers, described as longtime veterans of the force, were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center and reportedly were in stable condition. One was shot in the leg, and the other was hit in the back, abdomen, shoulder and arm and was undergoing surgery. According to dispatchers, officers pulling up to the location were able to pull the injured officers to safety. The wounded officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant for armed robbery. Classes were canceled at Riverside Elementary School on Friday because of the standoff. North Gwinnett High School and Lanier Middle School will be open. |

A friend who is a Suwanee cop said he & about 100 other cops spent a long cold night across from & around the house. He's trying to catch up on lost sleep today & will call me later. Apparently the perp earned a felony arrest when he drove away from a DUI check point the night before & in the process ran down several officers. Prayers out for the shot cops & their families. 7mm |
I went to the hospital to see the officers where I was able to speak with one officer who said that they checked out the house and were going to serve an arrest warrant on the bad guy from an incident the previous week. There was no previous call history at the location and if I remember right, he said no Criminal History (or at least violent CH) on the bad guy. They went to the house and knocked on the door, which was slightly ajar when the BG asked who it was. The Sgt replied it was the Police and had a warrant when he attempted to push the door open with his fingertips, where he felt resistance. The Sgt pushed the door a little harder and still felt resistance when the officer pushed the door open with his foot, when there was no resistance and the door fully opened. He said they went in to look for the guy and all he saw was muzzle flashes when they were hit. Everybody did an outstanding job as far as recovering the wounded officers from the front of the house while this idiot was still in there and they were removed safely within a few minutes of everything happening. The Officer I'm told, even while wounded, stood watch over the Sgt to make sure the guy didn't come back, which I think was extremely courageous. The Sgt was hit 4x and was in surgury where he had his spleen and part of his colon removed, a punctured lung and a broken arm. He's currently in a medically induced coma and still has more surgury to go to because of fragmented organs and the broken arm. He's going to be ok I'm told, it's just going to be a little while. The Officer took one in the left leg, just above knee height. No bones were hit and the round went in the right side and out the left. I think he was released shortly after I left. |

My quick reading of the story was that neither officer died from their injuries. While I support the necessary taking of life to save lives, the only person who died here was the shooter. Maybe it was the best way to preserve life from that point out, maybe not I'll never know because I wasn't there. So I'm not critiquing what happened. But I feel bad for the guy who felt he had nothing left to live for. I feel bad for the officers who were shot, but I bet they are closer to their families then ever before. I feel worst for the officer who made the decision to shoot and kill the suspect. That will follow them the rest of their lives. Slow and painful comments get me worked up. Aren't we beyond that yet? We're gun owners. We're tasked with knowing and accepting the huge burden of being capable of taking a life. I expect more out of the people here and with time...I'll get it. |
| Article today announcing that the suspect killed himself stated that both officers were in stable condition and expected to recover. From experience with broken bones and such, the degree of recovery can't really be predicted, and it'll be a long road for both of them. |
May goodness and mercy follow you all the days of your life.
