news reports been saying the wildfires in s.e. Georgia are pretty mean. any ARComers affected? had to bug out? media makes it sound like a fiery Katrina. how bad is it, men? |

for once the news is correct. jesup, ludowici are having heavy smoke. coming home from work thursday it was pretty bad in Odum to Surrency. read somewhere that Douglas now has some fires. saw some people in the local walmart this weekend, they had to leave waycross and come north east some to breath some fresh air. Strycnine, you must be close to me |

Looks like my mother-in-law is getting evacuated tomorrow. My wife went down there this morning to help load up essentials in her SUV and her mom's Town Car. The fire dept told her and her neighbors to rig sprinklers on the roof too. My wife forgot her camera too. She was going to take some pics of the wildfires. She said it's raining down ash and have to wear a mask, even if you are outside for 5 minutes. The plus side of having mom-in-law at the house is the cooking. Can't stand her mean ass apple-headed Chihuahua though. ETA: Mom-in-law is in Homestead/Folkston area. |

it's pretty smokey in Brunswick this morning. My clothes actually smell like smoke after only being outside for 30 minutes. We haven't seen much smoke since it started. Think they've had worse luck in JAX since the wind is blowing it down there. I took my wife to the airport in JAX about 10 days ago and driving down I-95 between exits 6 and 26 was pretty bad. I was on the causeway bridge this weekend and you could see the cloud of smoke. It's crazy man. I work with a few folks that live out in Brantley county that have been nearly evacuated several times. They said the fire was now only a few miles away from their house. They left a note on the door to call them in case something happens. They said you can't find out whats going on unless you drive up to where the firefighters are. You can go to Brantley Telephone homepage and click a link for pics and info. Dont think its been updated since last friday. ETA: I can't imagine how many homes and businesses are going to be effected by smoke damage alone. |

thanks, men, for the update. stay safe now! P.S. re: smoke and ash smell our volunteer firefighters here take a 5 gal plastic bucket, tie off a big piece of window screening over the top, and then dump a few cups of the rice-sized calcium chloride pellets (stuff you use to melt snow) onto the screening. they put this in a closed room or locker with their smoke-smelly gear. In a day or two, the smell gets absorbed by the pellets, they liquify in the humidity, and it drips thru the screen into the bucket and you toss it out. I've even tried this in a moldy damp crawlspace and it got out the stank. Home Depot, Lowes, hardware stores have it. but don't let it near bare metal, man, it'll rust it in no time 'cuz it's salt. |
| Smoke has been pretty bad here in Kingsland. The fires have kept me away from the range for two weeks of my leave before I have to report to my ship that is in Virginia. A few of the folks here in the local shops are volunteer fire fighters and they have been working their butts off. |
Today seems like the first time the smoke has been really noticable here in Savannah. A friend of mine just sent me this about the wildfires. www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDUy43-8brY |
