Hello all.  I've been poring (sp?) over the MARTA map and the E6 Decatur, GA stop caught my eye.  MARTA is classed by the APTA as Heavy Rail which is defined by them as "high-speed, passenger rail cars operating singly or in trains of two or more cars on fixed rails in separate rights-of-way from which all other vehicular and foot traffic are excluded. Also known as "rapid rail," "subway," "elevated (railway)," or "metropolitan railway (metro)."

I looked up information about Atlanta and Decatur on www.city-data.com.  For being so close to Atlanta, Decatur seems to have a much lower crime rate  For example, in Atlanta for the years 1999 till 2003, the City-data.com crime index (higher means more crime, U.S. average = 329.7) was 1,236.9, 1,257.9, 1,195.5, 1,131.4, and 1,033.5 respectively.  However, the City-data.com crime index (higher means more crime, U.S. average = 329.7) for Decatur for the years 1999 till 2003 (they don't report any data for 2001 which is odd) is 421.4, 306.1, 263.7, and 274.1 respectively.

Why is there such a difference in crime between these two cities? They look fairly close together on the MARTA map (www.itsmarta.com/getthere/schedules/index-rail.htm)
in my opinion.

I would guess because atlanta is much bigger than decatur..... Also I want to say that decatur has some very ritsy parts to is....and not as many Ghetto parts to it as atlanta does....And adding to the numbers is the amount of people that come into atlanta from surrounding areas for bars and nightlife, which end up drinking and generally acting stupid like getting DUIs....and the like....

Downtown Decatur is one of the nicest areas in Atlanta. Very cool, small town feel. The prices reflect that, too. Pretty expensive. Outside of downtown, it is much like the rest of Atlanta.

Decatur, you have a few very nice areas with the convienence of only having to walk a couple of blocks to buy a crack rock!!

Decatur for the most part if you are a person with money as a great place to become a victim with the convience of being close to downtown Atlanta which is another total shithole.

Stay out of anything Dekalb or Fulton county.  Yes there are nice areas in both counties but you get to pay higher property taxes to support shitbags that wont work for a living and make a hobby of electing the worst corrupt politicians available.

Go to a northern ATL surrounding county.  Cherokee has great values in housing.  Cobb county is nice but you pay high taxes but has some great school districts.  Bartow and Paulding have some good values on housing but the school systems at large are not that great.

If you like the "hoodlife" and all of its "benefits" then live near ATL.  If not, move a little ways out and get a nice piece of property!

CCW and knowing not to go to an ATM by yourself at 2am helps a lot

It is worth every penny and we have some nationally recognized schools here too.

If you do not work ANYWHERE near atlanta I would agree.  However if you do work near ATL and do not like sitting in traffic all day, I suggest NOT living outside the perimeter OTP.  OTP is nice if you like cookie cutter restaraunts and neighborhoods and 2 lane roads that should be 4 lanes.  If you can afford to live in a nice area in Decatur it really improves quality of life.   I have lived OTP and could not stand the traffic and all the minivans and teenagers.

Or if you are going to work near ATL pay more and get a nice piece of property in Decatur.

Hey man you left out the part about only being a couple blocks away from a crack rock if you need one!!

I know there are nice places there, but they are within short walking distance of the worst places.  I have no interest in anything inside the perimeter any more.

Damn, I always forget the crack rock!

Very True.  When I first met my woman she thought I was nuts b/c I always CCW.  We met in Augusta.  Now  after 2 years in Decatur she says she does not want to live anywhere else, BUT she is considering CCW herself.  Helicopters and the news have changed her perspective.  She no longer believes bad things only happen to "that other guy".

Good for her!  We need more of the good guys/gals carrying.  At least she is coming to her senses and seeing that the one thing that the media pours down our throats is true.  It is shown everyday in the newspapers, TV, and crappy liberal biased movies from holloywood  bad things happen to unarmed people!!

I can tell you right now....it aint what it use to be. Back in the 70's it had probably close to a zero crime rate and was a premir communinity. Demograghics are much different now......I would pass on living there now. Agnus Scott is still a bright point there.....those gals sure did know how to comfort a young man from south Georgia going to Ga. Tech in the big city

Dude, I work in DeKalb County.  I work FOR DeKalb County.  You couldn't pay me enough to live anywhere in DeKalb, except maybe the very, very north tip, in a nice neighborhood in Dunwoody.  Decatur is NOT near the north tip of the county.  Decatur's city limits butt right up against Atlanta's city limits.  As for looking at things to do with MARTA...Don't.  If MARTA is involved, in, nearby, or even looks at an area funny, that area turns to shit.

If you work in the city, I suppose living near the city is fine.  If you work in the suburbs, living near the city is like living in the fiery depths of hell, only with more crime.

Decatur does have its own fire department, the bunch of snobs.  They send their fire trucks, and we have to come get their patients.

I live downtown. Have for almost 10 years. Never been a victim of a crime. Decatur is a nice town, I keep my horses there.

Just to be fair. I live OTP and work in mid town. 20ish mile commute takes about 35-40ish minutes. You just gotta find the right roads. Avoid the interstates.

Oh, yeah, Decatur is part of Atlanta. Right guys? No I don't mean city proper, it is like a neighborhood of/in Atlanta.

Decatur is the City Of Decatur. It is not a neighborhood like Candler Park or Morningside; but a separate city.

All that ITP OTP crap is stupid....Buncha snobs in atlanta. I used to hang out there alot and actually had people tell me that they didnt hang out with people from OTP...How freaking gay...I grew up in Mableton...Nowhere near the city...But It took me 20 minutes to get to Little 5 points...at that time the crime rate in mableton was way lower per capita than atlanta and the directly surrounding areas...I used to want to live in atlanta when I was younger...But now wou couldnt pay me to live inside the perimeter...actually I am planning to move further out in the next few years....I like a yard and no helicopters hovering over my head looking at traffic....and dont get me started on traffic....its bad everywhere in atlanta. And I have just as good if not better dining, malls, stores, bars. And if I want to eat at say The spaghetti factory, or see a concert. I will drive 30 minutes and do it. I know people that live in atlanta that it takes longer for them to get to a place on the other side of town than it does for me to get there...If your thinking about moving here and working in atlanta...Move to somewhere on the east or west side about 20 or so miles from the perimiter...You can be at work in less than an hour, lower loving costs, and all the amenities...with closer ranges...

Take a breath.  Chill.  Do not take the ITP OTP stuff personally 762.  It is a simple way to get a quick idea when something is inside the perimeter or outside the perimeter.  This helps so people can get backroad shortcuts in their mind when someone is trying to give someone else an idea where something is located.  I work OTP and ITP and try to use 285 sparingly.   OH yeah, punctuation.  (smiley with a tongue)

In case you all didn't know, spinaBifida is in a wheelchair. I would imagine that transportation and proximity to work and play is a huge factor.

Decatur is a city, not a neighborhood. There are many areas inside of the perimeter that I would love to live in. ARH has never lived outside of Atlanta and he would not have it any other way. I, personally, live OTP in the suburbs because I can get more house for my money and have a big yard for my kiddies and dogs.

I travel all around Atlanta on a daily basis and can tell you that not all of the areas inside of the perimeter are crime infested.

I have a friend who lives in Decatur and loves it because he can ride his bike (pedal-powered) to MARTA and zip down to his job by 5 Points.  It is an easy commute for him.  No traffic worries.  From his house you can walk to restaurants, bars, etc.  I've only been there a couple of times, but it seemed like a decent place to live.

If I could not drive, or had to rely on public transportation, I would put it on my list of places to check out.  Atlantic Station may be another good place.  Anybody else have any ideas with public transportation in mind?

Ok, I will try this again. Yes, Decatur is it's vewy own itsy bitsy wittle city, but if it weren't for the signs, you'd never know you left Atlanta. There is no real separation is what I meant. Most cities inside the perimeter are that way. It's Atlanta.

Anywoo, I hope everyone elses comments have helped.
