Hi all, I have a Norinco Dbl under folder that had a lot of little rusty spots all over. I bought a can of Brownell's TEFLON/MOLY OVEN CURE and had Tucker Gun clean & blast the gun then apply & bake it. When I got it back It looked sweet! But as soon as I started reassembly the coating started chipping all over, one slide of the safety and it took the paint off right to the metal. I'm a little pissed. I guess they had an old timer do it and he's never done it before, all he kept telling me is to send it off get get it hot blued... I was wondering if any of you that have refinished an AK in the past would be willing to give me a hand doing it right. I live in Duluth & work in Doraville, but am willing to drive most anywhere. I know some of you live north of me and I'm up off Mundy Mill going to the lake quite frequently. I also hit American Marksman once or twice a month. Any help would be great, I'll supply what ever I can; including the beer. Thanks, Adam |

I'd say they either blasted it with glass beads or didn't degrease it good. I might be able to help you out. Let me see what I can pull together, and when. BTW, buy Gunkote or Norrell's for bake on stuff. The aerosol cans are only o.k. If you want a nice finish, it has to be sprayed on with an air brush or paint gun. (You get more Gunkote for the price than Norrells, but Norrells has more color option IIRC.) |

You will eventually learn that you can just as easily do a poor job yourself as opposed to paying somebody to do a poor job I find that most slightly handy people can do a decent job right off the bat if they follow the directions to the letter and don't get in a hurry. Expanding your capabilities is always a good thing. Nobody is born knowing this stuff { no matter what you might infer from many of the posts on this site ]Did they refund your money ? I might can hook you up with somebody that can parkerize it for you. rj |

I'm just looking for a nice semi gloss, almost flat, black. I have a detail touch up gun that holds a pint but my compressor is down right now. I'd also like something that is going to hold up well. With color not really being a issue I could get the Gunkote and leave you with what's left over after doing 1 gun. I don't see myself needing to do this again anytime soon and I don't know what kind of shelf life it would have. rj, no refund but they told me they'd knock some off my next purchase & I'm thinking about getting a Glock or a 1911 in the not to distant future. |

Lemme see how much GunkKote black I have left. Out of the airbrush I think I have enough ot finish (it could be a nearly full bottle- I ran out on my last gun and had to buy more. I just don't recall how much I used). You'd just need to get some acetone and/or SDA to degrease- or TCE. If you get TCE, it works great, but you'll need to have a respirator- it'll make you deathly sick. |

A friend of mine works in a print shop in Gainsville, so acetone is no problem. I've got a respirator, where should I look for TCE at? Also what kind of beer do you drink I'm not in a big hurry but it'd be nice to get it done by the end of the month. Thanks! Adam |

If you get acetone, you won't need TCE. (It's the kind o' stuff that makes you wonder if your grandkids will come out normal) Gave up drinking years ago. Let me see what I can pull together. I'll be shooting on the 24th, so maybe if you're around on a Sunday we can get together. PM incoming. |

BTW Rusty @ David's Gun Room is the one who told me to get the stuff I used. I should have just started a thread here before I did anything but from what I'm told Rusty does most of the smith work there so I thought his recommendation would've been good. I know that it doesn't matter what you use if the prep work is done 1/2 a$$ that's why I had Tucker do it, DGR's blast cabinet was down. Live and learn... |
