I recently sold a pistol on the EE.  We agreed on a price, and I requested a USPS postal money order.   USPS MO was not sent, but I did receive a convenience store money order, and I didn't ship the pistol until the MO cleared my bank.  The MO cleared and I shipped the pistol, which the buyer received around two weeks ago.

Here's the thing.  The party originally requested a copy of my driver's license to be included with the pistol.  However, I did not include a copy of my DL because I do not feel comfortable sending out copies of my private information.  I explained this to the individual, and they have now informed me that their FFL will not release the pistol until they have a copy of both my DL and the original signed FFL copy they sent with payment.  I explained that the FFL copy has been filed, as is customary with anyone shipping a firearm.  I also informed them that I am not comfortable sending my personal info, and that federal law does not require a DL for an FFL to receive a firearm from a private individual.

Well, now the party has stated that if I do not send the FFL and copy of my driver's license, then the dealer will not release the pistol and they will be forced to ship the firearm back to me for a refund.

What should I do?

Also, how long can a dealer hold a firearm without releasing it in this situation?

He does not have to release the firearm if it is their policy. If you do feel comfortable sending your personal info, then don't.
Ask him to ship the rifle back. He may require that it go back to an FFL dealer, If so, find one local and have it sent to him. Then, go pick it up.
Then, Find another FFL dealer and send it to him. Usually all that is required is a name, address city state and zip for the FFL dealer to record in his bound book of where the rifle originally came from. We usually just include a typed letter with the firearm for him to record the info in his book.
You should have got all of this out in the open before sending the rifle to the FFL.

I agree!

Anyway, how long can the FFL hold the firearm?  They have had the gun for almost two weeks now.

Make a copy of the FFl for yourself and send the original and a copy of your DL to his damn FFL.

Your DL information is nothing secret , quit being friggin parinoid.

OR

Send the money back.

I have seen this alot where someone makes a "bad" copy of their DL, almost unreadable.

Here in Georgia, mayhaps.  Other states are dumb and use (or at least did at one time) SSNs for your DL#.

Reject has a point, up until a few years it was optional in GA to use your SSN as a DL number. So if you have an older license that hasn't been renewed in some time, you may want to blur that out. Generally speaking though (for most license holders) DL info isn't anything special.
