Hello everyone, Does anybody have any experience w/ crossbows?? Could you recommend one for deer hunting? I was looking at this one. Barnett Rhino Sport Magnum What do you think? Thanks, Accountant |

Buy a good compound bow and learn how to shoot it. Okay, seriously. I have zero experience with crossbows. They do look like a lot of fun. However, I like to still hunt during bow season. I think walking around with a cocked cross crossbow is either dangerous (if you have the bolt in it) or asking for damage to the bow (if you dry fire it you could crack the limbs). I can nock an arrow on my compound and walk around all day without fear of accidentally discharging it, but I'm at the ready to draw and make a shot. If you get a crossbow, don't be like most of the crossbow shooters I've seen who buy a crossbow, shoot it twice and then sit in a stand opening day. Actually take the time to LEARN how to shoot it. If you get one, I want to shoot it though. I can also lend you one of my 3D deer targets for practice. Any archery equipment is cool. You can shoot it in your backyard without bothering the neighbors (assuming you're in a subdivision like me). Honestly, I'd love to get a crossbow too. Just don't have any experience with them. If you want to look at a compound bow, I might could help there. |
Only thing I know is that they were the first "armour piercing" weapons used in middle ages to shoot metal arrows through soldiers shields and armours. Those "beasts" were so powerful that required a special cranking mechanism to draw them. I'm also interested in learning about bows and crosssbows. Please let me know how this one goes. |

I've been hunting and shooting bows (compounds, self, long, recurve) for over 15 years now..........hence my screenname archer2 (archer too!) If anybody has any questions, I will be more than happy to try and answer them. I have done most of the repairs/modifications to my bow and my kid's bows for years. I make my own arrows (from components), and have the capability to straighten aluminum arrows, re-fletch, etc. Never done the crossbow thing.......kinda hits me the wrong way.......I guess i'm the traditionalist archer type. Not that crossbows are bad, but I agree with bookhound, people who shoot them RARELY shoot them enough to become proficient, or consistent. It ain't like shooting a rifle.....shot placement is critical in cleanly killing your intended quarry. Just my 2cents worth..... archer2 |
