Hello,

My name is Ben and I went to the gun show this past and have studied up on the AR variants and have made the decision to build myself one if I can save money doing it (I originally went to the show to buy a Mini-14 due to budget limitations).

I saw stripped lowers (Oly Arms) for $129 and lower kits/complete uppers for $415. Complete RRA lowers for $265.One problem I have is I can't tell a cast lower from a forged. My end goal is to have a low cost weapon that will hold the hill from 100 yards and shoot any rounds I find on the battlefield, if that scenario ever comes about. Once I build that and go shooting with you guy's, I'll probably have to build something that will give me a 1/4" grouping at several miles, but that comes later.

Who has parts, local or online? Any help/advice is appreciated.

Wish I could go out to Conyers to meet the shoot group this weekend, but Valentines Day, wife's birthday and Daytona are conflicting. Yeah, I know, priorities, priorities.

Regards,

Regards,

Ben

Welcome to the circus. There are lots of people here with lots of good info. I have thought about building my next AR, just gotta get a round tuit, and the wife's blessing.

Sorry to hear you cannot make it to the shoot. There will be others, especially when the weather gets nice. Yeah I know, it really hasn't been too bad yet.

Don't forget to check the Equipment Exchange, I got a great deal on a pistol for Mrs. ByteTheBullet for Cmas this year.

Tommy at georgiaprecision.com is a good guy to deal with.  Build your first, $100 worth of tools,  quality parts and you'll be good to go and if it breaks, you'll know how to fix it.  I personally build all RRA with chrome barrels.

Ditto. If you call Tommy, he may even help you build it. He has an FFL friend who can help you get your lower pretty cheap.

Tommy helped me build mine. You can check out the pictures at www.angelfire.com/falcon/chainshaw

Hello and welcome libertyandfreedom,

I just finished getting my RRA built and if I'm not mistaken, RRA doesnt do cast lowers, only forged. I just picked up my complete new RRA lower from Hit and Run gun on Britt Rd. in Norcross for 300 bucks. I messed around with the regular and NM triggers and I am completely sold on the 2 stage NM trigger that RRA has in their lowers. I doubt you will be disappointed with RRA, they are less expensive than Bushys and on all accounts, just as good in quality.

Don't let me be the one to sell you though, I am rather new to this all but have done lots and lots of research on uppers and lowers. Keep posting to get your questions answered, I found the cheapest prices online at kyguns.com but when I told my FFL guy that, he matched the price on the spot and I didnt have to pay shipping although I did have to pay local sales tax.

Do the math and see what brings you out on top, keep in mind that shipping is about 20 bucks per piece and the FFL fee is about 10 bucks. Another thing I dont know if you are aware of is that if you buy it already put together you have to pay the 11% federal excize tax.

Enjoy!!!

Welcome.

If enough people are interested in building a rifle, maybe we could get a group together and try it out.  That way we could at least share some of the tools.  For example, I wouldn't mind buying a few tools and sharing with everyone else.  And other guys could buy a few other tools.  Might be a nice way to spend a Saturday.

To answer your question, I don't know about building the rifles, but would love to learn.  I've looked into it and it doesn't seem too hard.

Again, welcome.  Sorry you can't make Saturday.  We'll schedule another get together soon I'm sure.

I'm in the Buford area and am more than willing to meet you somewhere to shoot and show you my ARs and other stuff.  It will help you decide what you really want if you can shoot different things first.

See ya.

Hey, I'd be glad to help someone.  Got all the tools and have built several.  Gonna build some FALs this year, but still enjoy building my fav rifle.

Thanks for the offer, P806.  I'm serious about building something.  However, it will probably be 6 - 8 weeks before I have the cash to do an entire rifle.  I could maybe start with a lower since I need one for the M4gery upper I just bought.

libertyandfreedom, what do you think about doing something like this?
