So, should we now post event type threads here so more Georgia members will see them? I like the idea of getting together again for a group shoot. Charlie Elliot seemed like a good meeting place. We still going to try to get together in February? |
I was thinking TALL wussy hunter types... Bradd |
...only if we can fill them with red jello first...

Keep me informed, I may come to one and bring mucho toys and gadjets. GPSS www.georgiaprecision.com |

I'll go. Where are you at? I'm in Forsyth, Monroe County GA. Done killed 6 deer and still going in the morning. But, I have NO pork in the freezer. GPSS I usally hunt on Oaky Woods WMA, when its open, since I live in Bonaire, I am only about 5 minutes away, if not there I go with friends that have access to property around here. On Oaky Woods, right now, through Feb. you can hunt hawgs with small game weapons, I use a .22 mag, stalk up on them, try to get within 50 yards of so (watch the wind, those porkers can't see well, but they got a helluva sense of smell), and shoot them at the base of the ear. Took one last Tuesday afternoon about 100 lbs. Now that is some good eating. |
|
DSVET91 - Man, I'd love to do some pig bashing. None of my hunting buddies hunt hogs. We mainly deer hunt, but a few of us do turkey hunt. This season was the first time I went dove hunting. I'm in northern Gwinnett county and I'm too lazy to look up Oaky Woods WMA in my rules book. Where is it located? Also, what are the regulations on weapons for hogs (i.e. do you have to use a rim fire)? Hope to see you at the shoot in Feb. |
We usually float the river behind the base and Oaky woods and shoot them with 22 mags. I have been twice this year but have not scored yed. My buddy killed 3 the day before I last went. Usually slip along and shoot them off the bank. Tommy |
I dunno... it seems to be a running trend that some rain will be encountered... Back in August, it was late in the day, in November it was just a light sprinkle. Who knows what February will have in store. |
| Okay, how about the 15th then? I can switch around my schedule and make the 15th. Hey Reject, you know unless we just pick a date no one else will commit. What do you say we just say the 15th is it? If anyone can't make it I'm sure we can setup another shoot sometime soon. We'll never pick a date that's good for everyone anyway. |
|
HA!! You sneaky bastages thought you could hide from me here in your little "georgia forum", but I got a guy on the inside! Im in for Feb 15th if thats the final date, i just need to know so I can make sure and tell my p/t job i'll be sick that day! I got about 60 cans now, i'll bring more boxes, but I need somone with a truck to volunteer to haul off the trash (my honda dont hold it so well)! Jello anyone?? Anyone? btw, Bookhound, whatda get me huh? huh? whatda get me! :) |
|
Alright, I admit it - I'm more than a little slow. I just figgered out the meeting posts will now be in the Hometown board rather than the General-Meetings board. Now that I'm on the right page, do you think we can get away with setting up an IPSC/FDCC style course of fire at Charlie Elliot? The rangers seem pretty tolerant as long as the shots are hitting the backstop. I was thinking something like bowling pins on a table (pin must hit the ground, limited to six shots for six pins), a mover like FDCC's setup (headshot first target to activate a mover that goes behind hostages), and/or an offhand marksmanship stage (red jello milk cartons on the backstop?). If there's interest, I'm willing to get busy on this. Of course any help would be appreciated. Caveat - I don't have a shot timer, and we'll need to be there early to claim at least three benches in a row. p.s..... I recall for the last shoot a South River member offered to get us in there. They have a fantastic facility for IPSC style courses of fire. Does this offer still stand? |
|
lostwildcat - Good to hear from you. I've got up to three 30-round boxes of IMI M855 (62 grain green tip ball made for Israeli military) for you. I know you only wanted a couple or three 20-round boxes, but I bought extra. I actually bought 5 30-round boxes ($10 each) so I could have some too. I've got two boxes loaded in mags, but the others are stored all nice a safe. No obligation, but you can have as many of the remaining 3 boxes as you want. zzxx99 - That sounds cool. I'd love to try something like the Florida guys did at their recent shoot. They shot at balloons and several targets from different positions. I'd really like to get into some IDPA or IPSC shooting to improve my skills. I'm game for whatever you have in mind. |

Okie dokie! Feb 15th it is... ***Men's Club Alert---Feb 14th is Valentine's Day*** I got my Eastman's postcard today, Cobb Civic Center gunshow Jan 11th & 12th. Prolly need to get some ammo too. lostwildcat, if we can put the cans in something that won't leak, I will take as much as I can carry. We gotta find a dumpster near the range. I wonder how many cans the 'outhouse' would hold?!? ![]() Let me know what I can bring. ByteTheBullet (-: |
Sure I will be Camera Man again! Maybe I can borrow my brother-in-laws camera and take some video too. Yeah, you were caught at that bad angle, weren't you?!? I could look for a 'slimming' filter. For a small fee I could Photoshop you in the nice way, too!! ByteTheBullet (-: |

I'm tentatively in for the 15th. Where are we going to shoot? What's the range setup? What should we bring out? On a side note: I've got a little hiccup in the rifle destined to become my SHTF gun. Won't lock back sometimes on the last round. USGI mags. I was wondering if we have anybody coming that knows how to do a detailed exam. |
|
Horseman, I'm sure several of the members can take a look at the hold open problem with you. I've learned a LOT from these guys over the last year. The range is at the Charlie Elliot WMA. They have a 25 yard (I think) handgun range and a 100 yard rifle range. You will need some type of target holder. A lot of guys "find" old for sale or election signs and staple targets to those. You must have eye and ear protection. Something to drink is a good idea. Both ranges are covered and have benches. Last time we met at a Craker Barrel before hitting the range. I'm in for that if anyone else is. Kind of a good meeting place. Range opens at 09:00 (is that right??) and it is a good idea to get there early to set things up (and get a bench). Anyone up for Cracker Barrel? |
|
Cool. Charlie Elliot is the default outdoor range for my merry band of friends. Alas, we haven't been out that way in a while. It'll be good to get back out there. Don't know where the Cracker Barrel in those parts is, though. Our usual plan is to get snacky food for the day, then stop and annihilate a steak somewhere on the way back. I'm trying to recruit the aforementioned band of friends to come out to the shoot. Can't speak for them, but as for me, Cracker Barrel would be just fine. Think I should mention here, that Charlie Elliot range frowns on shooting at trash. Even if you're good about picking it up. So, paper and cardboard (plus holding apparatus) only. There are no firing points without benches, but there is room to toss out a mat between them. Don't remember what time it opens, but it's "X:00 am or whenever the sun goes up" sort of deal. Same thing in reverse for the sun going down and closing time. Closed on Sundays. My present plan of toys to bring will be the fail-to-lock frankenAR that I mentioned before, and probably one other that's completely different. Maybe the M1 if I have enough ammo left for it. If not, then I might throw together some more for the M1A. (Don't have enough brass farmed up to really reload for the M1 yet...) I'm certainly open to be influenced on what to bring though. |
|
Horseman, I caution you on bringing an M1A. Last time ARH brought his and I don't think he ever got to shoot it. There were too many of us drooling all over it. There will be lots of ARs. Seeing/shooting a Garrand would be real cool. I'm really interested in different optics people are using on their ARs, so I'll be bugging everyone with any kind of scope. In addition to my 20" Bushy, I'll be bringing a DSA FN-FAL, some bolt guns and a few pistols. Last time we moved to the pistol range in the afternoon. |
I think I will bring the .45/70 an AR, and let Horseman do the M1A duty. I need to put something together for the CQB class. I really need to get some trigger time on the pistolas. ARH |
|
Yea, I also need something for CQB. I've been saving for an M4 profile Bushy and should probably be able to get it plus some optic before April. I really don't want to do any CQB trainng with a 20" HBAR. Better yet, could you see me running CQB drills with the 21" FAL, bi-pod and all? I need pistol work too. At least now I've got those extra 15 rounders for the Ruger 9mm. |
No problem with that! The more interest I can farm up in the M1 family in general (to include the M14 and M1A) the happier I am. I figure, everyone who's here is already sportin' wood for the AR, so that'll be my part of community service. I have no clue what I'm going do do for ammo though. I need to rummage the inventory. I might be able to scrape up some bux and get some at the funshow this weekend... but things are tight. So, we'll have to see. A couple hundred rounds should be no problem.
I know for a fact I'm short of appropriate .30-06. Let me dig though, and I'll see what I can do. I definitely want to have out my FrankenCARbine, to see if I can work out the lockback bug. It's got a C-more on it, so you'll be able to try that out if you like. It's a nice dot, but I don't like the switch. Hard to grasp with bare fingers, harder to grasp with gloves. Feels a lot like the laser bump on top, too. But, once set, it's sweet. I'm giving some consideration to modifying the sights to Santose IBZ config before we meet, so I can resight it in when we're there. Been meaning to do that for a while.
Cool! I've never shot a FAL before. Just looked at the fun shows. I might have to pick your brain about them, for future reference. |
You betcha! Got it a couple of years ago through CMP. You CANNOT beat the CMP deal. The M1's are cheap, honest quality (as graded), and are of immense historical value. You only have to shoot one match to meet that requirement. There are introductory highpower matches at River Bend every month that qualify. You shoot on the 100 yard range, supervised, with experienced help on the line. There's also a teaching session in the match schedule somewhere. They show how to use sling, sight picture, calling shots, and so forth. The introductory matches are relaxed events... each stage is explained, and the time allowances for each stage are flexible, especially when someone's learning to shoot. They even allow .22s and scoped rifles, which are usually not permitted in those type matches, if that's all the shooter has. The second requirement is that you belong to an affiliated club. Georgia Sport Shooting Association qualifies. You can get a yearly or lifetime membership. Both are cheap for what you get. Third and final CMP requirement is the paperwork packet. You have to send in a copy of your score card or match bulletin, photocopy of your GSSA (or whatever club) membership card, order form, and a notarized affidavit that you're not a criminal or revolutionary. It used to be, I hear, that you had to accumulate experience at matches, in order to qualify. Plus, I think there was an activity requirement in your club. You also had a limit of one rifle per lifetime. Politics have changed though, and CMP is trying to get as many M1s as possible out the door to as many decent people as possible. Now, club membership is good enough, no activity required. Shooting one match (even introductory) is good for five years of ordering from CMP. I think the purchase limit is now up to five rifles per year. Stripped and barreled-only recievers are also available, for people who want to start a parts kit project. Oh, and if you're qualified to buy a rifle, you can also buy ammo, loaded on clips, with cardboards. I think it was about 60bux per 280 round can last I checked. (note that some places around here are charging a buck or more just for one M1 ammo clip, with no ammo in it!) Your M1 rifle will come inspected, by the volunteers at Anniston. You will need to clean it and lube it. It comes with a book with the how-tos... but once your order goes in, I doubt a team of horses could peel you off of the informative websites while you're waiting... You will want to replace the op-rod spring, just as a good maintenance measure. They're cheap enough. I think CMP has 'em, but I got mine from Fulton Armory. You will want to have, on hand, some appropriate grease. M1's main lube is not thin oil like AR15! Tetra grease, TW-25B, or Lubriplate (for the historically correct) are all fine. A small art brush is good to have, to get a nice coat in the working channels. Oil is OK if that's all you have, but you'll have to reoil it before or after every shooting session, since it gets knocked out of the bolt and op-rod tracks quickly. There is one place (the firing pin channel lube hole in the bolt) that does better with normal oil. So, yes, please please please, go get your M1 from CMP! They're an endangered part of our history, and damn fine rifles to boot! (see what happens when you get me started!) ![]() |
Nope! They host events for non-members, including the introductory match. The introductory highpower match cost, I think, $15 to enter. That covered cost for target & repair center, and pasters. There was also a small, just for yuks, prize for the top three shooters in each category. First prize basically walked out with $5 more than they paid. Four categories were awarded: Match Rifle (AR, M1, M1A, etc.), Bolt Action Rifle, .22, and Assault Rifle (AK, FAL, other Eurasian lead huckers, etc.) Naturally, the hardcore competitors who show up tend to clean everybody's clocks, with 490+/500 scores, in the Match Rifle category. My friend, who brought the only Assault Rifle one day, got first place in his category with a 60/500. (He flinches a lot, and that AK seems to have some little tech issues...) I think non-members are also allowed in regular Highpower, and the various action pistol and rifle events. Only members or guests can just show up and shoot -- non-members can only go to hosted events. Check out http://www.rbgc.org/ for details. Looks like the calendar's a bit out of date. They used to have a PDF bulletin for download, monthly. Don't see it on the home page any more, but it might still be there somewhere. www.rbgc.org/ |
| well the nice thing is I am in the military so I am exempt from the competition requirement. I am thinking about buying my limit this year due to my having a larger disposable income. I will probably join a club in Florida when I get there (will be active duty there for the next year or so). |

Whew... Thought i was going to be in DC that week and weekend. I was gettin po'd cause i seriously need some trigger time. Cant wait to do some shootin!! I'm in for cracka barrel, i'll be there early as usual (i only leave at 3). I would love to shoot your Fal Bookhound, I had one for a while, but it was made by Hesse and well, thats all for now. How do you feel about the hirtenberg .308 ammo? How do you feel about free hirtenberg .308 ammo? good, cause i'll bring some for ya! Hey horseman, has anyone at the range ever said anything to you about shooting cans? I only ask because i'm pretty sure the DNR ranger was there last time we shot and he didnt seem to mind. (anyone remember, seems he liked our little game?) See ya'll soon. |
Hirtenberger 7.62 NATO (.308 Win) is fine stuff. I believe it's reloadable, though IIRC the flash holes run really close to minimum size for some decapping pins. They may have changed rangers... it's been over a year since I was out that way. I didn't see anybody breaking any of the target rules while I was there. Didn't ask, either. Most of the time, the Ranger comes over to see what's going on, when people are shooting. When you have interesting stuff like ARs and M1A's, then he likes to stick around. At any rate, I try to respect the rules of the range where I am. Much though I wish sometimes for a place where I can dispose of some antiquated hard drives... |
|
lostwildcat - I've only been shooting the Portuguese battle packs. Great stuff; even though I pay more than I should for it. My local store sells it for $40 per pack (200 rounds). I can have it delivered for cheaper, but like to support the "little man." Since you have to drive so far, I thought maybe I could help subsidize your trip. One of your 30 round IMI M855 boxes is on me. Bring me $20 for all three of 'em. (See what happens when I surf and drink!!) Cheers, bro. But, I plan to pick your brain (if there's any left after that drive!) about that Otis cleaning kit. Can't wait till Feb! |

Taxman, and anyone else: Here is a link to the last outing. It has directions and other sorts of useless information. **Removed dead link** I am looking into a 'slimming' filter for my camera but they are EXPENSIVE!!! You guys don't make it easy for me... I am trying to get a camera that can also take video...look out!!ByteTheBullet (-: |
Shit, the Barrel probably only offers a Deep Fried Veggie Plate, with gravy!!! YUMMIE!!! The trick is to hang out with people that have a wider girth than yourself...hmmmm, better stop before I get into more trouble. Cannot wait to go shooting and to see you guys again! ByteTheBullet (-: |
