Hello All,
This is my first post in the Home Town area, as I normally I hang out in the Retro section and just discovered the NC Sub-Forum. I live in Burke County, Western NC,,,, It was great to find the local group and I hope to be able to share and contribute some with you guys. Even stumbled across the Spring Shoot thread while browsing..... I am truly WAY BEHIND the curve when it comes to any related knowledge of NFA, Stamps, Trusts, Form 1, Etc, Etc. I'm trying to figure out how's the best way to proceed with a SBR build (Colt DOE 9mm clone, which I currently have all the parts to configure as I pistol but haven't). Honestly when it comes to which is the best and fastest way to go about legally owning the SBR, I'm really uncertain and lost...as there is no one close by that I know of that can help guide me. I'm aware of changes coming very soon due to changes in the law (So I'm guessing I really need to get moving fast) I've some what looked at online NFA Trust but not sure if I should just try to find a local lawyer with experience to set one up, wait for law to change or what?Completing the Clone SBR build is my main goal but if possible I would like to run a silencer and don't mind coming out of pocket for both at the same time but don't want to do anything that would slow up or hinder the SBR stamp, as note the SBR stamp is most important to me at this time I would truly value any advise or guidance any of you guys could share, weather that's how to approach...wait for the law change or move on it now, online trust sites, a local lawyer, etc, etc, Or if anyone is willing to take and give me guidance through the process through IM or Email that would be great also! Sincerely, Scott |

Trusts are currently the easier way to go. Buying a trust online or going local lawyer route is totally up to you and what you feel comfortable with. I personally bout a trust from Coyote Rifleworks and have several stamps approved going that route.
The easiest way to get your Form 1 rolling is going the eform method. An entire how to guide can be found here. It's a great how to guide. Also if you are wanting a suppressor check out tarheelstatefirearms.com. Scott is very easy to deal with and or send him an email and he can couch you thru the while process. |

There are at least two guys in NC that I'd recommend for suppressor purchases, and both of them will give you a free trust template if you ask. The aforementioned Scott @ THSF, and also Jeremy @ JKSilencers. Jeremy is in the Lincolnton area, and Scott is in Matthews.
I've been down the NFA trail 30+ times so far, with about a 50/50 split on paper vs eForms. Plenty of guys here can also help. Feel free to go visit the Armory, where you'll find a whole section of NFA forums. You could also check out the NFA subforum over on CSC if you want to find some more local shooters. Feel free to ask anything you want here, or by IM. As far as trust vs individual, the rules change 7/13/16. While it's way easier to file as a trust right now, all those advantages go away in July. Depending on your number of responsible persons, it could be a major pain to file an entity after the changes. Even though I only have myself and two other trustees, I'll probably acquire future NFA items as an individual. |
