Wife unit and I are headed down to San Juan, PR for a cruise in May and we have a 10 hour layover in Charlotte.  Any decent places to eat that are in the vicinity of the airport and maybe something fun to go and see?  Any help appreciated.

Not near the airport.  It's relatively close to uptown Charlotte and there lots to see and good eats there.

10 hours isn't a lot of time though. Have to get away from the airport then back and go through security. Depending on the day and time security can be a .

Last week some TSA was pulling every other bag out for extra inspections. There was no line but it still took me an hour to get through.

Thats kind of what I figured.  We will be flying all night and we generally dont sleep on planes so we were hoping to get a little shut eye and maybe nose around town.  Probably just have to find someplace that has a restaurant attached to it.

Catch a ride to Pinky's (Morehead location) and eat a Triple G burger, plus an order of fried pickles.

Well for starters being by the airport puts you near a secrete gem http://www.carolinasaviation.org/  Carolinas Aviation Museum has the flight/miracle from the Hudson on  display, on top of everything else. One great free reading library. Plenty of planes to climb in and on(check schedule for air shows).  Air National Guard base may be able to hook you up with a tour.

As said Pinky's West Side Grill which is on freedom drive and more head. Great bar food  and let any youngin's play on the triceratops.  2 blocks closer to downtown(called uptown by civic boosters and it is on hill after all....) is   "The Open Kitchen" A great Italian places that has been there since the 1950/1960's with eye candy galore. Bonus points if you find where Jerry the mouse's home front door is....Think and look at kid eye level

10 hours doesn't give you much wandering time with leaving and coming back , which sucks you will be on the edge of a major WW1 training Camp that Brought 40K of people to a community that only had 40,000 folks spread out across the couny. But very little remains of Camp Greene and it was about 56,000 acres iirc.

Also http://wikitravel.org/en/Charlotte will help with an overview, The theme park Carowinds is nice and close to the airport but the cost might not be worth the limited amount of time you would have. Unless you like roller coasters, the parking has taken out a lot of the calmer rides for children, older folks, injured and/or disabled who can't take the jarring speeds and jerks of thrill rides. If you like whitewater then U.S. National Whitewater Center may you place to go to.
