Hello all so I a new to ARs and building my first one on top of that. Trying to stay budget friendly as I am a single dad on a limited budget. I was planning on buying a complete upper but got a deal on a barrel so now I'm building the whole rifle.
Anyone one got any idea what it would cost to have a smith around Raleigh or Wake Forest check head space for me. Since for now I'm only building one I hate to spend 60 or so on gauges Thanks for the help in advance |

If you disassemble the bolt and get it ready for a headspace check, it takes someone with gauges about 3 minutes to check headspace.
A Smith I use from time to time checked headspace for me on a couple of cartridges I did not have gauges for no charge…… like I said, it took him all of a couple of minutes. I offered him 10 bucks and he refused to take any money. I personally wouldn't pay more than $10.00 for a headspace check if I have the bolt stripped. Any more than that and I would just get the gauges….. if you use them 4 times over the course of your lifetime, they pay for themselves. My bet is you'll end up like most guys and do a few more builds in your lifetime. |
| Thanks for the responses guys. I will probably just put it together and shoot it. It's all new parts and I can't get anyone local to return my calls the one guy that did wants 30 bucks. And I just don't think it should cost that much out of the gun. And I'm getting an itchy trigger finger |

I might speak blasphemy here but... Ive never checked headspace on any of my builds and Ive never had a malfunction. Now, my factory bought rifle- Smith and Wesson M&P15... I've had 1 double feed. It may be luck, but I am convinced I can build a better rifle than the factories. I also take the time to "true" my receiver faces (Where the receiver meets the lip on the barrel).
The real test is going to be when I finish my .308 "AR" style rifle. One thing I don't understand is, what do you do when the headspace isn't right? pout? have a shop drill it out? I think it would cost the same price of a new barrel to have it altered. Best of luck on your build! |

Thanks for the reply I finally got ahold of smith around here that seems to have a good reputation and he said the same thing didn't see it was nessisary and he never checks his builds. Just wanted to be sure with my first build and first AR have the lower done. And filling sick I better take off work early today and build my upper |
