So I'm doing my research on getting an FFL, and I'm curious if anyone on this board has tried to get one in NC, and if so, what experiences you've had.

I live in Raeford, looking to do it as a kitchen table venture.

Looked into it, contacted the BATF, ordered the forms, and still confusing.  I did a lot of reading and this is the best single source of info I found (plus the cheapest besides doing it 100% yourself).

FFL Kit

Besides that, finding someone who has done it and would help..... I am still playing with the idea. ;)

You must be as ATF puts it   " In the business"

They will not issue an FFL to a person(s) looking only to basically acquire firearms for their personal collection

The best you could do in gaining an FFL, would be a C&R 03 type, unless you are planning on actually running a legit firearms type business

Hope this helps.....

Legit business can be interpreted many ways.  Yes you would have to get your property rezoned as business.  Certain IRS requirements as a business.  And you would have to sell a gun.  After that who cares.  You did your part to be legitimate.  If the market is not there it isnt your fault.

Im sure your buddies wouldnt mind paying you 900 for a new Rock River. I have the application myself but I know a guy so it really isnt worth my time.

ETA:  Also Im sure I dont have to tell you the benefits of operating out of your home.  I understand gun store operators need to make a living, but when I see price gouging and lame prices it makes me wonder what side of the line they are walking on.  A business is for making money.  If you sell out of the home with no cost of operation, then your looking at passing SIGNIFICANT savings to your friends and family should you choose to do so.  In my opinion, especially considering the current political climate, putting rifles in the hands of law abiding Americans is a greater concern than making 500 dollars above dealer price just because you can.

But my job pays pretty well so Im not talking about keeping my bills payed and paying for my kids education here.  Just something to think about.  The one downside to operating out of your home would be the fact that alot of gun manufacturers wont sell direct to you unless you are a "stocking dealer" with a store that is so many square footage, etc.  But I will tell you that you will find enough distributors and people willing to sell direct to "Joe" to make it worth the 200ish dollars it costs for the license.

I would do it, but my job has me moving around alot so like I said earlier, not worth my time.

To get an FFL you must be in the business and by that they mean you must have a store front. I have an FFL but mine is for doing gunsmithing  which is the same 01 FFL you need to be a dealer. You will also need to check your local ordnices and you would also have to get a tax number from the IRS.

It isnt worth the trouble, I dont sell guns for the simple fact that it makes the paper work alot eaiser and when they come to do a check there is alot less that I could have done wrong plus im not in the bussiness to sell guns.

I can tell you that most of your local gunshops but not all are not making that much when they sell you a new firearm. By the time you take the shipping out of there price and the time they have to spend doing the paper work which is more than you filling out the 4473 form it is a real headach.

If you are getting them to be a kitchen table dealer they will not give them to you. They used to but Cliton took care of that.

Just my .02 worth
