I have NC concealed carry permit and know there's reciprocity in SC. I read through the SC hangun/CC laws and would like some clarification on a few points you in the know. I'm going to be down in Hilton Head for 10 days on vacation and want to to be certain on a few points. 1. Assuming you can legally carry concealed in SC (NC with reciprocity in SC), it seems the law states that when in your vehicle the handgun can NOT be on your person, but has to in a box or glove box, armrest storage area, etc. Is that indeed the case for a CC permit holder? 2. I couldn't find any definitive information on the requirement to notify the police if pulled over. I checked a few websites and read, "no requirement to notify" and "required to notify". NC requires it and I'd like to know something definitive on what the law REQUIRES in SC. Thanks for your help. |
1) If you're a CCW holder, the gun either needs to be on your person, or in a storage compartment. A non-CCW holder must keep the pistol in a compartment. For either a CCW holder or non-CCW holder, if the pistol is going to be kept in a compartment, it MUST be a latching compartment.....door map pockets, under the seat, etc don't cut it, and in SC, improper transportation of a firearm is a felony. **at least, this is what the guy who taught my CCW class said--he's a SLED LEO. 2) Yes. You must notify SC LEOs if you are carrying if they initiate the contact (example: they pull you over) |
Thanks for the clarification. On my person or in the glove comparment or other "latched" compartment in the vehicle. Must notify. |
