Well,

I am studying up on the permit, and going to take my test next week for the learners permit.

Then going to get a Yamaha YZ6 most likely.

Got the insurance quotes, full coverage is 2400 a year, but liability is only 123 a year.

So i will buy the bike outright and get the liability.

Any words of wisdom?

take it slow for a while.

No matter how good a rider you are there is a Buick out there with your name on it. Keep your head on a swivel.

No offense but get the most insurance you can afford. Liability will not cover any damages due to you just dropping the bike or incidents where you may be at fault. This sort of thing happens and it only takes 1 drop to total motorcycle esoecially if it has fairings  I came out of work one morn to find my baby laying on her side in the park space. $1800 bucks damage out of my pocket

Also when you ride you must also be aware of theft. bikes are prized and sought after by the thievery community. Liability will not cover that

I drive nearly 100% on back roads and away from traffic. Be very careful; and realise everything out there  is a possible accident. I enjoy riding very much. I go fast on occassions, but I pick my spots very carefully. No where near cars.... Good luck WarDawg.

 Ps I ride a Honda 919.......

I had a Kawasaki  KZ650 in college. LOVED it. Thinking right now about jumping back in and getting a BMW F800ST. Already re-upped the permit.

I've had my license for many years. I didn't get any permit. I bought the bike and rode it for two weeks then took it down to get my license.  My first bike was a Honda 700 Maxim. The best advise I can give is what the DMV officer said, and that's don't bring a big heavy bike to take the test. If you can borrow a smaller bike from someone, do it. You stand a change of dropping a big bike in the slow speed parts of the driving test.

Yup.  Ride like you're invisible.  People in cars will look right at you and not see you.  Best to assume they don't.

Plus you will crash it. Hopefully it will be a slow moving one.

Who are you getting quotes from? Don't know your details, but I know young age and/or driving records, as well as sport bikes drive up the cost of ins.

I would shop around to make sure you're getting the best deal.

Im in SC now, and mid 30s, pretty clean DMV record, and recently got a Harley, which prob is much less than a sport bike for ins. But FWIW, I shopped around and got Progressive, they were the lowest quote at around around $550 year, then once I got the insurance, they reduced it for some reason to around $300 year for full coverage.

Much cheaper than my other ins company Allstate, or the Geico quote I got. I checked w/ a couple other companies too. YMMV, but shop around.

You can do liability, but ask yourself, if this bike was stolen, wrecked, or whatever, tomorrow, am I comfortable being out the $5-10k and either being w/out the bike, or forking over another $5-10k for another one?

I understand if it's a $5k bike for example and full coverage is $2400 yr, you may want to play the odds, but maybe you can get a better quote on the ins., or buy a cheaper bike to get you buy until you either get older, and/or get a better dmv record, or what not, as I don't know your details. I'm not sure what full coverage should cost for you, but even for a sport bike, that sounds high to me at my age w/ my record...

Good luck either way.

Take the course and respec the bike...the minute you think you have it mastered id will hurt you...

And remember, there are two kinds of riders:  Those that have been down and those that will go down.  I'm in the former group and I'm not trying to scare you, I'll have another streetbike soon, and have been riding on and offroad for *gasp* 20+ years, I love 'em, and hope you ride safe.

Take the motorcycle safety course of you have no experience.  It will save you $$$ and skin, plus you get your signature once the course is completed.  You'll only need to take your written test at the DVM.

I got rid of my bike after 3 close calls within the first year that I had it. All 3 incidents the other driver did not see me. Only one of them actually resulted in an accident. I was not injured but it was enough to make me think about the chance I was taking by riding.
