Don't tell me that's from the scrap collector fella that lives nearby and makes his living scrounging brass and other scrap.

I have not talked to the rangers about this. and probably wont.

My problem with the thing and some of the earlier incarnations is that this is NATIONAL FORREST. You know the peoples land, Public land yours and mine and everyone else's.

I have a strong reaction to someone locking up public property. If some one wants to put out cans for people to put brass in or not fine, but no individual has the right to lock up things on public property like that.
Some one might decide to cable and lock one of the 4x4 trails for only his use, or put a gate on the boat ramp. same thing to me.

This is absolutely correct. HOWEVER.

These things are bolted pretty good to the 4x4 posts. you would have to pry them off with tools and a lot of force.
I would not like to see the posts get damaged over this foolishness.

i talked with him the last time i was out there... he reloads what he can shoot and sells the rest for scrap... and he doesnt mind the steel stuff, he sells it too...

im kinda with NOI on this... this is public land and and he doesnt have the right to do something like this...

besides, i wonder what the forest service would think about him drilling holes in the posts to mount these things? wouldn't that be intentionally damaging federal property?

also im kinda taken aback by the idea that someone thinks it is ok to make a profit off of a public facility

If this was the skinny dude and his kids picking up brass last time we were there, they were very polite and always asked if they could pickup my casings. They even had that big magnet on a rope for picking up steel casings.

You don't have to put your bass in those containers if you do not want to. We are lucky if most folks shooting at Flintlock pickup anything, much less their bass.

I really can't believe what I'm reading in this thread! Do you honestly think any sort of equipment is allowed on a public range in a national forest without the consent of the USFS? Geez man the rangers are most likely the ones that placed it there.
My guess is they're trying it out to see if the brass collected can be sold to offset operational costs, the rangers down here in the Francis Marion Forest have discussed doing same sort of thing.

The kind of vandalism you guys are eluding to will greatly improve the outlook the USFS has towards rifles ranges and the shooters using them. WTF are you thinking!!! Do you know if we lose a range it will be almost impossible with current regs to open another one, it's got to be three miles from the nearest paved road for starters.

How many of you have volunteered with the USFS to help maintain the ranges or other recreational areas under their care? Just as I thought not a f&*%@ing one of ya. Well I spent all day yesterday (a Saturday) at Twin Ponds range with the rangers installing new shooting tables and benches and picking up trash too. These rangers are darn happy to have the help why don't you step up and give it a try. We have lots more work to do and can use more help like patching the roof over the tables where idiots / vandals have shot holes thru it.

You guys better wake up to the fact that the rifle ranges are a sore spot with the USFS and the pencil pushers would just as soon close them if they could. The constant maintenance the vandalism and trash dumping creates strains the budget of the USFS and is going to ruin it for all of us.

Gee maybe I'm crazy but I love the fact that I have not one but two free public USFS ranges within 35 miles of my home. I can shoot a full auto M60 or a single shot 22. My few days a year spent helping as a volunteer seems a small price to pay for such a privilege.

So in closing I'd suggest that instead of "foaming, pissing or crapping" in the brass can you call the ranger office in your local area and volunteer to help them on the next range clean up day. So quit your whining and cowboy up MFer's.

Errrr, several members here donated entire weekends to get the Uwharrie range reopened. I mean Friday until Sunday night camping out there (winter & summer). There would be no public range there if not for the countless hours they put in.

Many more have gone out to clean up days. We also pay the range fees to shoot out there.

The individual that put those containers out takes the brass to sell with none of the profits going to the range.

Well u352 I stand corrected and that's good to hear. I hope more will find the time to help.
However I still find it hard to believe that the brass cans belong to an individual instead of the State or Fed agency that operates the range.
If that is true then I'm sure they would have approved the installation of the cans and there must be more to this story than has been told here.

Believe it or not it is an individual.

Of course there is more to the story. Find it out before you jump in telling people who are there what is going on.

Keep watching here for the next get together at the range. Come on by get the story, some good food, lots of shooting and range clean up. Usually runs three days

Or just PM me I go out there about three times a week and pick up.

Well I've waited four days to hear more of the story and still don't have it all. I don't believe you've posted the name & location of the range. If you have the details please share them with me since you're the OP that would not be asking too much. As for me jumping in and telling folks what's going on you yourself said the following: "I have not talked to the rangers about this, and probably wont." Well why not talk to the rangers and get the info, what is your source of information? Forward me the name & location of the range and the local ranger office phone number and I'll call them myself if that's what it takes.

My impression of this thread from the beginning was that it had a negative tone to it. I got the feeling the intent behind the pic of the can was to stir the pot so to speak. While a few people posted positive replies most piled on crying foul.

Making 3 trips a week to clean up is admirable and my hat is off to you keep up the good work sir.

As far as helping out at the next "clean up" I'd be happy to except I'm in SC not NC it's just a bit too far to travel.
I will, however, extend the same offer to you since we'll be back at Twin Ponds on June 28th finishing the table/bench installation and doing general clean up - bring a rake and a bucket or two. After that we have plans to build a ramp at the Tibwin hunt unit for mobility impaired hunters feel free to join us!

One last thought on the brass can being bolted down & locked is this. It must be secured or else the vandals that plague all of our public ranges would roll the thing down range and make a target out of it.
6/22/2008 12:37:12 PM EDT
[#28]
It is a very negative thread indeed - against "Joe Blow".  In the future instead of waiting four days please send me an IM or an Email before launching an attack on your fellow forum members.

The range is the Flintlock Valley Shooting Range. Do a search on Uwharrie for more details. Here are the highlights.

In the original thread "Joe Blow" had put his pails at a public range to steal resources from other reloaders or metal recyclers. Someone took offense to this and defecated into one of the buckets (not one of us). He then put out plastic buckets with locks on them. Some range visitor figured out that locks don't work very well on plastic (again, not one of us). Now he has graduated to the Nuke Proof design. Everyone here who goes to that range is all for range buckets that are fastened down (yes some slobs will shoot at anything here too) but no one agrees that Joe Blow should be able to lock them up for his exclusive use. That being said these are not the kind of folks that would destroy anyones else property but we can dream about it.

If anyone would like to state why they wouldn't like to help keep our public ranges open, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise I believe we are all in agreement. Let's move on, shall we?

PS- I vote that for the fall shoot we tie pretty bows around the Nuke Proofs (if they are still there).

I am the OP as anyone can see. I posted the photos with out comment because if you were aware of the situation you knew the  story.

I did not and have not mentioned publicly who is doing this.
This went from nothing to amusing to strange to currently ridiculous. It has been a process two years in the making.
It started with 5 gal buckets left at the range for people to put brass in (and Clicker 58 is correct they were promptly used for targets by some jerk) and metamorphosed in time to what you see in the photo.

OK this kinda rubs me the wrong way, because those things look pretty official. It certainly looks like the over-engineered, bomb-proof lock system that USFS and similar state-level agencies put on gates, towers, etc to keep them safe.

If I hadn't read that it was an individual who put them out, I'd have assumed it was the rangers who had done it, and happily thrown all my brass in there. Knowing that I'd now be suckered in to lining some dipshits pockets nags at me a bit.

I wonder if someone could poop down into that hole?

Kind of harsh Huh .

Well lets see me my wife and kids and 2 or 3 others had spent 10 weekends in a row Friday morning till Sunday evening camping at Uwharrie during the feerzing winter serving as range officers to get this range back open for the public to use again. They were not going to reopen this range. Lets see you do that.
