I am looking for a place to go camping. I want to take my younger cousins out and try to get them out of the house and enjoy the outdoors some. This is not something their father will do with them but we have been before and I know they enjoy it. Last time we just went to Morrow Mountain. I would like to go somewhere that is not a "campground" so there is not so many people around. Do any of you guys have any recommendations of places, other than just going out into the woods and finding a place? I know a buddy of mine found a place somewhere in VA that him and his buddies go that is a national forest, with just like a 10 car parking lot and a trail that leads into the woods and you just go in and camp wherever you want. That is kinda what I am looking for here. Somewhere about 1-2 hours away (I live about 30 minutes north of Charlotte) would be ideal but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks. |
| The Uwharries are perfect for this. I believe you are looking for what they call "primitive" campsites. I too hate camping next to someone elses RV, trying to sleep while listening to them getting hammered while blasting some crappy music at 3am. Most of the primitive campsites are alongside the road, but also have paths that lead out to a campsite even further back into the woods, so you dont have to watch the occasional car pass by. |

Take a look at South Mountains State Park - it is south of Morganton. It is one of the largest state park in NC. They have a lot of hiking trails with a handful of primitive campsites. I've been there a few times - it is pretty quiet. Some of the trails are fairly strenuous. Downer is carrying all of your gear and water several miles - may not work with a couple of kids.... Here is the NC state park url : http://www.ils.unc.edu/parkproject/ncparks.html |
| most of the campsites along the road have a path that leads off to a more secluded area, altho you are still 50-100 meters from the road. I like the one right after the gun range, on the other side of the off road trail entrance. if you keep going further, you will eventually pass a damn on your right, and you will see a parking spot for one or two cars, and then a trail that leads down a very steep decline. at the bottom is a pretty spacious campsite by the water, with a fire ring, and large cut logs to sit on. |
I might have to take a trip down there this weekend and scout out areas. Is there any charge for camping at Uwharrie? Thanks |
No charge for primative camping. |
