Just out of curiousity, did you pick your screen name for Hellmut Rathkes boat? Or does it have another meaning?

I just read Homer Hickams book "Torpedo Junction", and your screen name was the first thing that came to mind when he mentioned the ordeal of bad luck that followed U-352.

Some pretty incredible stuff happening right off the coast in early 1942, I had no idea Paukenschlag was so successful for so long. We just couldn't turn out our lights, hard headed sea captains, disbelief that U-boats were here at all. That was just an incredible read.

Those dirty Germans were ALL OVER the outer banks. Sunk a few boats too.
Uncle Naci used to tell me stories of sailors washing up on shore in the village in Hatterass.
Fascinating!! People are more interesting than books when dealing with history

I didn't realize that the Hickam that wrote Torpedo Junction is the same guy that wrote October Sky.  I loved October Sky, actually used the book to teach a group of high school students that reading can be fun.   Hickam tells a great story with the way he writes.  I gotta get  a copy of TJ to read.

Factoid, off the topic but I found it interesting:
Rocket Boys, the title of the book, was made into a movie.  The title of the movie was October Sky, the letters from the book title were used to make the title of the movie.

Took me a minute to figure out what you meant, but that's pretty neat. Hickam did an outstanding job with "Torpedo Junction", and actually cites all his references to include dives to various UBoat wrecks of the NC coast as well as actual phone calls made to surviving UBoat commanders in Germany during the 70s and 80s. Anyone with any interest at all in WWII or UBoats will not be disappointed with this book.

Geez, if I keep on, I'm gonna bill him for advertizing.
