Gun owners forced the NC Senate to gut SB 8 which would have made it illegal to carry any firearms in or near parks, playgrounds, parking lots ect. See the new bill here: http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2007/Bills/Senate/HTML/S8v2.html |

I'm glad they change SB8 -- it was very poorly written. I tried to contact the main sponsor (Boseman) and she is a terrible anti-gunner. Guns go against her "moral" values, even though she is a lesbian that is involved in a custody battle for her kid with her ex-girlfriend (according to my local newspaper). HB1847 was also VERY poorly written law, that victimizes law-abiding gun owners a second time if their gun is lost or stolen. By simply not reporting theft "in time", you become a CRIMINAL. Even worse, it could basically be called the "Gun Trafficker's Protection Act" since it would create a way for illegal traffickers to remove themselves from responsibility if one of their guns was used in a crime. Read about it at: www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?id=2966 |
Yes, you're missing the part they took out about NOT being able to carry a gun within 1,000 feet of a school or playground (even with a permit). Read Section 2 of the FIRST edition of this stupid law, which is my understanding?? that no longer applies. www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2007/Bills/Senate/HTML/S8v1.html Thanks again to GRNC. |

Box 10684, Raleigh, NC 27605 919-664-8565, www.grnc.org, GRNC Alert Hotline: (919) 562-4137 GRNC Alert 5-23-07: MESSAGE DELIVERED, LOUD & CLEAR TRIPLE WIN: VIGILANCE STILL REQUIRED Today, you and thousands of other GRNC members and supporters won three decisive victories in the North Carolina legislature. In short, the thousands of e-mails and phone calls you directed to legislators delivered your message, loud and clear. Details follow, but the short version is that HB 1847 (stolen guns) went down in flames, SB 8 (gun ban in parks, child care centers and playgrounds) was amended to *completely* remove gun language, and SB 466 (concealed carry of *toy* guns) did not come to a vote, probably (but not certainly) rendering it dead. HB 1847: "PROSECUTE LAWFUL GUN OWNERS" GRNC killed the bill in a 77-41 floor vote in the NC House. Not only is the bill dead (as opposed to lingering to be fought next year), but GRNC got a clean recorded vote which, we assure you, will be used to punish anti-gun politicians in the 2008 elections. What made the victory sweeter was not only winning over anti-gun politicians in the Democratic party, but also routing the strategy used by lobbyists for North Carolinians "Against Gun Violence" to divide the Republican caucus: As with HB 1287 a few weeks ago, NCGV couched gun control as a law enforcement issue, winning support from a Republican former sheriff and now House Rep. JOE KISER (R-Lincoln, GRNC evaluation under review), who worked to draw Republicans to the anti-gun side. Given that this was the centerpiece of NCGV's liberally-funded legislative agenda, you owe yourselves thanks. In the floor vote, thanks are due to Reps. MARK HILTON (R-Catawba, GRNC ****), PRYOR GIBSON (D- Anson, Union, ***), BILL FAISON (D- Caswell, Orange, 0-star), BILL DAUGHTRIDGE (R- Nash, ****), RONNIE SUTTON (D- Robeson, *), and BONNER STILLER (R- Brunswick, ****). SB 8: "GUT NC CONCEALED HANDGUN LAW" With this bill, your earlier input appears to have delivered the message. Sponsor JULIA BOSEMAN (D-New Hanover, GRNC 0-star) preempted problems by introducing a committee substitute that completely eliminated gun-related portions of the bill, rendering it irrelevant to GRNC. The harmless version of this bill passed through the committee. Warning: Amendments to the language could be added to again include anti-gun language. Go to: http://grnc.org/alerts/autoemail.htm to send a message that the present version of the bill is acceptable ONLY because it does not include gun control. SB 466: 'EXPAND CONCEALED CARRY, INCLUDE TOY GUNS' Discussed in one of 3 (yes 3) Senate J-1 committee meetings, the bill was rendered PROBABLY dead by virtue of making the Thursday crossover deadline. Keep your eyes open in case the opposition finds a way to ambush us. CONGRATS TO *ALL OF US* Not since the dark days of the 1990s have we faced-much less killed-this much anti-gun legislation. Thanks are due not only to GRNC leadership-who prepared alerts, updated the website, stalked the General Assembly, and spent untold hours researching, prepping, driving, etc, but... TO YOU. Here is the reality: * If we sent alerts to which you didn't respond, we would lose. * If GRNC didn't deserve your support, we would lose. * If you didn't trust GRNC to respond in the (perhaps imperfectly) best way possible, we would lose. * IF WE LOWER OUR GUARD FOR *A SINGLE MOMENT, * WE WILL LOSE. * |
