| Well when I moved here I thought I had everything I needed. I have a chp in Va. To get that I sat through a 4 hour NRA training class at a gun show. I got the paper work for a chp here in charleston and I need a minium of 8 hours. Theres also a part on the back for range score and such. So anyone want to recamend where I get a "coach/trainer"? I live in folly beach. Also how much is this going to cost me? Im assuming I only need 4 hours now instead of 8 since my certificates 4? |

Sorry, but the classes aren't cumulative from state to state. You're going to have to take a state authorized class which is a minimum of 8+ hours and pass the range portion (usually not a problem). I'm not sure where you're located at, but I bet someone here will chime in with a recomendation on who to contact. Good luck and welcome to the real world. :) F3 Edited to add: This info is for NC so your mileage may vary..... |
| When I did the nra course he told me I could get a chp anywhere. He said just save the certifcate. He told us florida was one of the best states to get cause of all the states they have reciprocity with. And this was a Va instructor. But o well more training cant hurt anything but the wallet right? |

The eight hours is basically four of class and four of range time. Check with Trident Tech to see if they offer the class (Midlands Tech in Columbia used to and was cheaper than the local range). The class is easy and Stevie Wonder could pass the shooting portion- you only need 70% on the black part of the target (I was shooting the target in the groin, I shot a smiley face and a heart shape and both hands just playing around). Florida is easy to get with a copy of your SC permit, fingerprints, and a check but SC doesn't recognize Florida's permit |

Great links, I will add them to the important info page. SC Grass Roots CWP Trainer List SC Firearms Laws |

I got mine at ATP. I chose that shop because it's one-stop shopping. They do the training, range qual, fingerprints, photo, and all the paperwork right there. Some of the other operations only teach the class, then you have to run all over doing the other stuff yourself. At this time CWPs are individuals run by the states. There is no transfer. Some states have reciprocity with others, but if I (having a SC CWP) move to another state, I'd have to go through that states training and certification process. Plan on a day spent between classroom and range time. Be prepared - the classroom part is geared for somebody who has never touched a gun before, so a lot of it will be extremely basic to you. Endure it. It's a one-course-for-everybody thing. The important stuff for experienced shooters is the info on legal use of deadly force. There is a written test and a range eval. You will shoot at ranges varying from 2 yards (IIRC) to 15 yards. 70% in the black on a full sized silhouette is passing. 90 days after successfully completing the training your permit will arrive in your mailbox. |
Your instructor was ... mistaken. BTW, I've been travelling to FL on business and they do not have reciprocity with SC. The law (according to www.packing.org) says that anyone who can legally own a handgun can carry it "secured" in their vehicle (inside the glovebox, in a zipped case, etc.), but I can't carry concealed there. |
Im gonna look into that. You dont remember the cost do you? |
TTC??? A CWP class? Hmm... I used to be an adjunct instructor there and asked permission to CCW on campus from the college president. When I taught it was nights and weekends. Usually my students and I were the only people in the building. The reply was an emphatic "Hell no!" The SLED CWP class requires live-fire range qualification. I doubt TTC has the facilities for that. If somebody checks with them and finds I'm wrong I'll be surprised. |
