How do I ship a firearm to a buyer out of state?  Do I have to take it to an FFL to ship it from?

You have to ship it to a FFL and you have to use overnight  for a handgun.

Actually, that is incorrect.  As long ad you are shipping to an FFL, by federal law it is legal to ship using the ground option of a private carrier such as UPS or FedEx.  Those carriers have their own, INTERNAL rules which say that you must ship handguns using their most expensive service, which is priority overnight.  This is why I ship my guns via UPS Ground marked as "machined parts" or something like that.  I'm breaking UPS's rules, which I don't give a hoot about, but NOT breaking any laws.  Oh, and it's about 75% cheaper

I did not know that you didn't have to use overnight.

ETA:

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be
used to ship a handgun. In addition,  Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract
carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm. [18 U. S. C. 922( a)( 2)( A) and 922( e), 27 CFR 178.31]
