| I have a lr 308b (dpms) fluted 18 inch barrel etc etc. Ive only shot over a 100 yards with it twice. No problems out to 500 yds then run out of scope. What I would like to do is build a cqb light weight upper. 14 1/2 inch lightweight barrel with welded compensator.to make it legal length. Is it possible to buy the longer barrel and have it cut down and threaded? I would use the bcg and charging handle from original and get anew upper receiver and associated parts. |

I'd look at getting a barrel that has a rifle length gas system free float tube. Being able to place the support hand further down the barrel really helps in controlling the rifle while firing or combatives. Plus, added protection for the barrel as it may get banged into things in close quarters.

| When .308 parts were still cheap, I fell into a lightly used DPMS AP-4 barrel that the previous owner had cut to 14.5" and re-threaded. I bought it and wound up building an entire rifle around it with the idea of getting an M-4 style .308 rifle that was as short and lightweight as I could get. I wound up putting a Magpul ACS stock (just because it looked right on it) and Moe handguards, and it turned out great. It weighs in at just an ounce or two over 8 pounds and is one of my favorite rifles. It's VERY handy, not at all unpleasant to shoot, and accurate as well. I also have a scoped SASS that is a tackdriver, but it's much heavier by comparison. I know some people say that a 14.5" .308 isn't ballistically effective, but I sure wouldn't want to be the test subject on the receiving end of that experiment. I just wish I had bought more .308 P-mags before the craziness started. |

Honestly a .308 in anything less than a 18" barrel is a waste according to a lot of research. I'm not necessarily disputing this, but my 16" LAR-8 has shot 5 shot .75" 100 yard groups with factory Federal Match ammo. Not that it is at all relavent to the OP buying a new uppper for his DPMS, just saying that I think a sub 18" barrel might still be acceptable for the OP's intended purpose. |

err the barrel length does not really matter for accuracy, just the FPS you will loose accuracy after the bullet drops under 1170 FPS but up to that point it does not matter ifs it 14 or 24 inches.
I was told my 16inch from armalite should be good out to 700-800 yards with a Free float |

If OP wants a 14.5" 308 then he gets a 14.5" 308. There's a ton of .30 cal rifles out there with less than 18" barrels that have killed a ton of game, but I guess a 20" barrel would have made them "dead-er"? |
