Small arsenal

Reminds me of one of SEVERAL confrontations I had with Burns Rent-A-Cops at KCI Airport. I have a friend who I had to pickup every three weeks at the Airport, shortly after 9-11, the Airport hired Burns and had them stationed at the entrance to the short term parking.

I pull into parking and this idiot walks up to me and states "I have to search your vehicle"!

O.K., this is going to get VERY interesting.

Me: What gives you the authority to search my vehicle?

Rent-A-Cop: 9-11

Me: 9-11 suspended the 4th Amendment on requiring Probable Cause?

Rent-A-Cop: I don't need it. This is private property!

Me: An Airport paid for by the taxpayers and operated and owned by a municipality is private property, I don't think so!

Rent-A-Cop: I still have to search your vehicle!

Me: Get me your supervisor.

Supervisor shows up, I go through the same logic. He states "what in the hell do you know about the 4th Amendment?"

Me: 25 years as a Cop!

At this point I'm starting to get pissed. I inform him that I'm calling the head of the KCI Law Enforcement Unit. He tells me that the Commander is not working. I inform him "Doesn't matter, I have Richards home phone number".

I call him at home, and he explains to me "I have NO authority over them and I have warned Airport Management that what they are doing is wrong.

One thing to keep in mind, I consider it a "Cardinal Sin" to violate someones Constitutional Rights! I have NEVER did it to anyone and I expect the same in return. So finally I tell them "fine, search". They spend 15 seconds looking through a 3/4 ton 4x4 Suburban.

A few months later, my son and I are at the range playing and realize "Oh shit" "I'm going to be late picking up Mike at the Airport"

Load the weapons in the Sub and head South....

Pull up to the security idiot....

"I have to search your vehicle"

"No Problem"!

He opens the rear door on the Sub and his jaw hits the floor

An M-16, couple of AK's, a LOT of magazines, several handguns.

I ask him "Is there a problem"?

He states "no"

I pull in and park and wait for Mike to call to ask where I am, I tell him in the parking garage. I would never explain why I had the smile on my face he asked about.

My advise to young men.

Never pick a fight with an old man.
If he is too old to fight, he will just kill you.

Same goes for old ladies!

A good friend of mine on St. Joseph P.D. who teaches hand to hand told me:

" I'm to old for this shit, if I have to fight someone I'm going to hurt them hard and fast".

It must be the skirt!   I just get, "Please place your hands on the steering wheel.  Don't make any sudden moves."

Dumb question but are we required to inform officers if pulled over while we are carrying?

I've had a few "encounters" with local LEOs while toten' iron.  So far, all have been good experiences, if not a little time consuming.
Way back when I used to hit every IPSC, USPSA and IDPA match from Topeka to Columbia, it was not uncommon for me to be running a wee bit late and go ahead and holster-up at home instead of waiting to do it at the range.  And of course it was just as easy to put the pistol and mags on at the same time.  Of course once in a while I needed to stop at QuikTrip (73rd & Wornall Rd) for a drink, smokes (at the time, no longer), etc, so on several occasions I walked into QT open-carrying an unloaded pistol & several loaded mags.  Every once in a while I thought better of it and left the pistol in my passenger seat, covered.  Never had a cross word spoken to me by customers or staff.  KC cops frequented this QT for the free drinks and the facilities and  I know they saw my gear on several occasions and yet they never said anything to me.  Until one day.
Turns out they weren't going to hassle me or detain me at all.  They were genuinely curious about the gear and where I was going with it.  IIRC they were a white and a black guy.  When I told them I was headed to a USPSA match at Millcreek (in DeSoto KS) They asked if I had any other guns with me.  Now don't take this the wrong way, but I can count on one hand the number of black guys I know who are into guns, so to find one "in the wild" piqued my curiosity.  "Sure I do, a couple rifles and shotguns in the trunk, all unloaded of course Officers".     They wanted to see them.  I felt a bit nervous pulling out the long guns in the QT parking lot but they said not to worry about it since they were the cops.    So, they spent the next few minutes genuinely drooling over and happily fondling my guns.  After a couple minutes I said "Hey guys, I gotta run" at which point they told me to have a great day at the range and went on their way.
Another time I was toten' a loaded .44mag on the front seat, in the open.  I got pulled over for some silly little thing.  I wasn't sure if I should conceal the gun or leave it out in the open.  So as the Officer was approaching my car I thrust both wide-open hands out the open window and informed the Officer "I have a loaded gun on the front seat".  He came up to the car, reached from as far away as he could, opened my door and asked me to step out.  He took me to the front of his car, frisked me and asked what was going on.  I told him I was just driving around with no particular plans.  He asked for ID and I gave it.  He went to get the revolver, unloaded it and took it and my license into his car.  A few minutes later he comes back out and says "You're clean and the gun's clean.  Please slow down" and placed the gun back into my passenger seat, unloaded, and off I went on my way.
Then there was MSHP Trooper Tyrell who stopped me South of Holden MO while I was CCWing in my car without a permit, which was and is legal.  I was supposed to meet a friend in Holden, but he never showed up.  I'm guessing one of the neighbors called my car in as looking suspicious.  As I was leaving Holden the Trooper passed me and immediately flipped a bitch, lit the rollers and came up behind me fast.  I pulled over, turned off the car, rolled down the windows, left my seat belt on and kept my hands on the steering wheel as one should to make the LEO less nervous.  He asked for ID and proof of insurance and asked me what I was doing in the area.  I told him of my no-show friend and he asked if I had any weapons in the car.  "Yes, in a holster on my right hip" was my answer. It was cold and I was wearing a jacket which concealed the pistol, but I was in my car so I was pretty sure I was legal.  Trooper Tyrell asked me to exit the car.  I said "but then I would be illegally CCWing without a permit" to which he replied something along the line of "It's okay, I told you to do it".  This could EASILY have been a trap and could have instantly landed me a UUW felony charge.
I get out slowly and removed my jacket.  The Trooper escorts me to the front of his cruiser where removes my pistol and unloads it on the hood.  He then asks me to get into the front of his cruiser while he "calls this in".  I think he thought everything was okay because he did not cuff me or make me sit in the rear seat cage.  He told me that he was pretty sure I was legal to CCW without a permit in my own car, but he wasn't positive.   So over the next half-hour he called everyone he could think of to find out.  Nobody he talked to could 100% say yes or no but he was pretty sure I was okay so he finally let me go.  He gave me his card and said that he would investigate this further and get back to me with a definitive answer on whether what I was doing was legal or not.  A week later he called me and said I was okay under the "Peaceful (Peaceable?) Journey Clause".
Very recently I was pulled over by one of Raytown's rookies for having no front plate.  I knew exactly why he flipped a bitch behind me the second he did it since I wasn't speeding or driving erratically, am not a wanted person and have no traffic warrants.  Once again, car stopped as soon as possible, ignition off, window down, seat belt still on, hands on wheel and "Good morning Officer".  "License and proof of insurance, please" was his response.  I handed him my license and separate Non-Driver ID with my CCW endorsement on it along with my insurance card.  And yes, I was carrying.  He came back a few minutes later and asked me if I knew I was missing my front plate.  "Yes", I replied.  "Okay, you might want to get that fixed.  Have a nice day."  6-7 minutes, tops.
Each time I was NEVER even the slightest bit anything but 100% cordial, respectful and obeying of their requests/commands and each time I was treated as a good guy.

Not that it should matter, but you treated the officers with respect.

When someone is polite with me, it's MUCH easier to say "I'm letting you go with a warning". If they take an attitude, not so easy.

I would rephrase the answer to "only if asked".

The last part of your story is hilarious!!! It's unfortunate about the ignorant security officers though.  I remember right after 9/11 the Airport Authority at Lambert did the same thing.  They had security guards posted at the entrance to the parking garage and they always told you they needed to search the back of the vehicle/trunk.  It went on for several years but is no longer in practice to the best of my knowledge.  I'm guessing that they received numerous complaints.
